How to Make Chocolate Covered Waffle Ice Cream Cones at Home

Chocolate Covered, Ice Cream Cones, Waffle Cone

Many people love chocolate covered waffle ice cream cones. It typically isn’t too difficult to find chocolate covered waffle ice cream cones if you happen to live near an ice cream parlor. Often these cones are available with chocolate alone, or nuts and sprinkles added onto the chocolate coating. Most often, chocolate covered ice cream cones are available only in the large waffle sized cones, and they always cost more than a plain cone. These specialty cones can also be found at amusement parks such as Disneyland.

But what if you don’t happen to be at Disneyland, and you still want a chocolate covered waffle ice cream cone? What if you don’t want to spend six dollars on an ice cream cone at your local ice cream parlor just to get a chocolate covered cone? What does one do if they don’t live near an ice cream parlor that carries these cones, or you want smaller chocolate covered ice cream cones for child sized portions? The answer is easy: you just make your chocolate covered waffle ice cream cones at home!

Making chocolate covered waffle ice cream cones at home is a quick and simple process. It’s also relatively cheap, when you consider that a bag of chocolate chips generally runs about two dollars, as does a box of twelve premade waffle cones. If you catch ice cream on sale, you can generally get two half gallons for about seven dollars, total. Add it all up, and you can make a dozen chocolate covered waffle ice cream cones for about eleven dollars. That’s less than a dollar each! Not a bad deal.

What to buy – Just about any grocery store will carry premade, boxed, waffle cones. You’ll find them with all of the other types of sugar cones, waffle bowls, and cake cones. While you’re at the grocery store, grab some ice cream, and then head over to the baking aisle for chocolate chips. You may want to choose the milk chocolate variety, as opposed to the semi-sweet chocolate chips. If you want to add sprinkles or nuts to your chocolate covered cones, you can also find these in the baking aisle of the grocery store. And if you don’t already have waxed paper at home, pick up a roll before you leave the store.

How to make the cones – Making the cones is easy. Simply pour chocolate chips into a microwave safe bowl (half a cup of chocolate chips will cover four of the premade waffle sized cones), and microwave for 30 seconds at a time. After the first 30 seconds, you’ll need to stir the chips, then pop them back in for another 30 seconds if needed. Typically, you won’t need to heat the chips for more than a minute total. Stir with a spoon so that any chips which haven’t melted entirely can finish melting in the rest of the warmed chocolate.
Lay a piece of waxed paper on a small cookie sheet. Take each waffle cone, and hold at an angle as you spin the top portion of the cone in the bowl of melted chocolate. Use the spoon to ladle melted chocolate onto any spots you’ve missed, then simply set the cone chocolate side down on the waxed paper. If you’re going to add sprinkles or nuts, just roll the chocolate covered cones in a bowl filled with the toppings until you have the desired amount sticking to the melted chocolate, before placing the cone on the waxed paper. When you’re done with all the cones you are going to cover in chocolate, place the cookie sheet full of cones into the freezer for approximately ten minutes. Fill with ice cream and serve!
