How to Make a Summer Candle Holder

Glass Jar, Summer Crafts

If you enjoy candles and crafts, then you can combine the two into one fun summertime craft! You can create your very own summer candle holder! This craft only takes a few materials, including an empty glass jar. While you can find the glass jars in stores, you can also look around your house as well. This will be a fun way to recycle your empty glass jars!

You can design your candle holder however you would like. But as the summertime approaches, you may be looking to create a candle holder with a summer theme to it. Summer themes can include the sun, seashells, and flowers. You can also use summer colors, such as red, orange, and yellow.

This craft will involve the use of glass and paint, so you will have to be careful when working on it. If your child is working on this craft, then it is recommended that you work with him or her closely. Here are the ideas, materials, and directions on how to make a summer candle holder.

Materials:

Empty glass jar (any size).

Glass Paint.

Summer Colored Ribbon (red, orange, or yellow).

Old Newspaper (to catch any drips and messes).

Directions:

1. First you will need an empty glass jar at any size. This can include pickle jars, baby food jars, and jelly jars. Tear off any labels that may be on this jar.

2. Carefully wash the empty glass jar out with dish detergent and hot water. You can either dry it yourself or set it on the side to let it air dry. Make sure it is completely dry before you begin on this craft.

3. Use glass paint to decorate the jar in a summer theme. Be sure to take your time with this step. Rushing through it may cause you to mess up your design.

If you are painting more than one design or layer on it, you should let the first layer or design completely dry before adding more paint.

Here are a few ideas for creating a summer design on your candle holder:

A. Of course you can paint the sun. You can even paint blue around it to act as the sky.

B. You can paint a pattern or design of seashells. The seashells can be in any color or size.

C. Paint on other beach related graphics. This can include starfish, palm trees, sand castles, and crabs.

D. You can paint on fish, crabs, and other sea animals.

E. Another idea is to paint on summer colored flowers.

Let all of the paint completely dry before you move on to the next step. If you are making more than one summer candle holder, then you can work on one candle holder while another is drying.

4. This step is completely optional. When the jar (or jars) dry, you can tie a small piece of summer colored ribbon around the jar in bow.

Safety tip: If you are tying the ribbon at the top of the candle holder, make sure the bow on the ribbon is not long enough to catch fire from the candle flame.

Once you have finished decorating your jars and they are completely dry, you can start placing your candles in them. Depending on the size of the jar, the candles can include tealight, votives, and pillars. You can make as many candle holders as you want. Use just one design idea or use paint different designs on each jar. Your summer candle holders will make great gifts, door prizes, and decorations for your home.
