How to Make a Styrofoam Ball Snowman

Styrofoam, Toothpicks, Winter Crafts

If you enjoy taking part in winter crafts, then you will love learning how to make a Styrofoam ball snowman. This craft takes a little time and patience to do, but it can also be a lot of fun. When you are done, you can use your Styrofoam ball snowman as a decoration, prop, or toy!

The materials used for this winter craft are inexpensive and easy to find. You can find them in craft stores, grocery stores, and stores such as Wal-Mart and Target. You may even find that you have these materials around the house!

While this may be an easy craft, any children working on it should have the help and supervision of an adult. The use of scissors and glue may be involved and you do not want them to get hurt or make a huge mess.

Here are the materials, tips, and directions on how to make a Styrofoam ball snowman.

Materials:

2-3 Styrofoam Balls.
Toothpicks (small pack or box).
Black Construction Paper.
Colored Markers.
Glue.
Scissors.
Colorful Construction Paper or Felt (optional).

Directions:

1. First you will need two to three pieces of Styrofoam balls. You can find them at craft stores such as AC Moore and Joann Fabric. You want them to be small enough for the toothpicks to hold. If you are using different sizes, be sure to put the largest size on the bottom and the smallest size on the top.

2. Carefully stick one of the toothpicks ends into the Styrofoam ball. It may be easier to start with the bottom ball, but this depends on your preference.

3. Carefully stick the other end into the Styrofoam ball you want on top or under the ball you originally stuck the toothpick in. If need be, you can use more than one toothpick to connect the two Styrofoam balls.

4. Repeat steps two and three if you are using a third Styrofoam ball. If you are starting from the bottom, then the third ball should be the head.

5. This step is optional, but if there is any part of the toothpick sticking out of the top, add another Styrofoam ball. If you cannot add another Styrofoam ball, then mark off the part that is sticking out, take the snowman apart, and cut off the tip that is sticking out. Then you can stick the toothpicks back through the holes in the Styrofoam balls.

You do not want anyone to get stuck with the pointed end of the toothpick sticking out. Plus the snowman will look better without any toothpicks sticking out of the top.

6. Use colorful markers to carefully draw the face on the head of the snowman. You can draw the face on before putting the snowman together if you want. Use the marker to also draw the buttons on the snowman’s body. Be sure to let the ink dry so that it does not smudge.

7. Draw and cut out the snowman’s hat from construction paper or felt. It may be easier to use the construction paper. If the paper is too dark, it may be difficult to see the drawn on hat. But you still may be able to cut out a hat from it.

8. Carefully glue the bottom of the hat to the top front of the snowman. This way when the snowman is looked at from the front, it will look like he is wearing a hat.

If you can make a 3D hat or buy a small hat that will fit your snowman, then carefully glue it to the top of his head. If it fits over his head, then you can carefully place it on without gluing it.

Give any glue used some time to completely dry.

9. If you want to give your snowman a scarf, then there are two ways to do this:

A. Cut the scarf out of felt and carefully wrap it around the snowman’s neck. Be careful not to wrap it too tight or hard. Doing so may break the Styrofoam ball snowman. Add a little glue to keep the scarf in place. Let the glue completely dry

B. Carefully draw and color the scarf on with a marker. Let the ink dry so that it does not smudge.

10. If you want to give your snowman arms, you can stick one toothpick in each side of the Styrofoam snowman.

You can cut off the tips sticking out if you do not want the pointy edges of the toothpicks exposed. You will not need to cut off the tips that are being placed in the Styrofoam ball.
