Styrofoam Key Float

Styrofoam

Going swimming, boating or relaxing with a walk along the edges of the shoreline barefoot with the tides sweeping in and around your feet are chances to lose your keys should they happen to accidentally get dropped in the water and sink to the very bottom of the abyss. Floating key rings give you an opportunity to recover your keys. They will float on top of the water giving you time to scoop them out or if the keys fall into the water and you don’t know where they landed it gives you time to spot them as they float. Of course if you are in a boat the keys could float under the boat making them difficult to find.

You can make your own floating key ring with Styrofoam, a small piece of car vinyl and a cord or a strong ribbon. With a utility knife cut out an oval. At the center of the smaller part of the oval poke a hole all the way through with an ice pick or heat the ice pick and melt a hole through. The latter is faster. Wrap the oval Styrofoam in vinyl. Shape the vinyl to fit and cut the access vinyl away. Punch a hole all the way through the vinyl in approximately where it will match over the hole that was made in the Styrofoam with a hole-puncher or the ice pick. Sew the vinyl together to close so that it completely covers the Styrofoam. If you prefer you can wait until the vinyl is sewn over the Styrofoam before making a hole in the Styrofoam or the vinyl. It’s probably simpler that way. All you have to do then is to heat the ice pick and melt it through the vinyl and the Styrofoam. They should match up perfect.

The Styrofoam and vinyl may catch fire from the heated ice pick or anything else that the ice pick is laid upon during the time that it is hot and likewise anything can melt from the heated ice pick.

The finishing touch to complete the Styrofoam key float is to take the cord or ribbon and slip it through the hole that you’ve created. Slip your keys or key ring through the cord or ribbon and tie it in a knot.

The Styrofoam key float makes an attractive addition to your key ring or your keys. You can carry it with you all year long or you can use it when you are going to be around water just untie the cord or ribbon and remove your keys or cut the cord or ribbon in two to remove your keys. Slip the keys or key ring back on the cord or ribbon and tie it securely when you are ready to use it again. If you have to cut the cord or ribbon you can continue to use it until the cord or ribbon is too small to slip your keys or key ring through and tie in a knot. You’ll have to get a new cord or ribbon when this happens.
