How to Make a Corsage for Prom

Corsage, Prom Flowers

A corsage is a big part of the prom dress code and can be very expensive depending on where you go to get your corsage. If you want to save money you should think about making your own corsage for prom this year since it is very simple. When you make your own corsage you can either choose to make it out of real flowers or fake flowers so you really have a lot of options as far as budget is concerned.

The first step into making your own corsage for prom is to gather all of your materials. For your corsage you will need a needle, thread ribbon in assorted colors, hot glue gun, scissors, mesh material, staples, fake or real flowers and if you want to you can get assorted decorations. You can find all of these assorted items at your local retail store or craft store and it will cost you about 20 dollars for everything.

The next step to make your own corsage is about cutting. You will need to get your scissors and cut a 10 inch by 10 inch piece of the sheer or mesh materials and then fold it in half two times. The mesh material should then look like a square but you need to cut the edges so they look more circular. You are going to unfold the mesh materials and place it in your hand while pushing the center of it in with your finger. Twist the materials down and around which helps out in the next step.

Once that is done then if you want you can add your own decorations to the corsage you are making for the prom. You can use jewels or glitter if you want around the edges to make the corsage stand out more. You can find a lot of different accessories you could put on your corsage at your local craft store or retail store and it will only cost you a few dollars. You can also use your hot glue gun to glue the decorations on your corsage so that you do not see any alterations or glue marks. If you know what decorations are on your date’s dress then you could use decorations or colors that accent her dress or accessories, do not be shy about making the corsage your own style.

The next step to make your corsage is to make some layers so it does not look too flat. Cut a couple pieces of the ribbon you have and make the edges come out at an angle. Cross the ribbons so that each end of the ribbon looks like a different material. You can then either hot glue the ribbons together and down or you can sew the middle of it together. You can then add your bow to the corsage, you can get the already made bows for about one dollar and they have the sticky side which works very well for your corsage. If you already made your own bow you can either hot glue the bow on to the corsage or you can sew it on. If you are not much into bows then I would suggest buying an already made bow with the sticky side already made for you.

The next step for your corsage is to add the flowers to it, which is by far the best part of the corsage. If you are using real flowers you need to take off the leaves and cut the stems off barely leaving about 1/3 an inch. Wrap the stems that are left in some floral tape in a neutral color such as white. If you are using fake flowers all you need to do is take the stems down to 1/3 an inch and then wrap the leftover stem in the floral tape. For real flowers, take off the green leaves, and cut the stems very short, about 1/3″. Wrap the stems in white floral tape. Put the flowers into the middle of the bow so it fits snug into the flowers and then hot glue the flowers down once you have them in the right position.

If you have any final decorations you want to add to your corsage, this would be the time to do it. You can hot glue any of the final decorations down and then you can get ready to add the last touch. The last thing you want to do is to add the wrist strap. You can use any materials for the wrist strap you want such as Velcro or stretchy ribbon depending on the look you want to achieve. Cut the wrist band to an appropriate length so that it fits comfortably and can then be tied into a bow underneath the wrist. To better get the wrist strap right you might want to measure the wrist and then add a few inches so you know you have enough to make the bow at the end.
