Madden NFL 2011 will have Drew Brees on the cover. Having Drew Brees selected for the cover of Madden NFL 2011 is a pretty nice accomplishment not just for the New Orleans Saints, but for Drew Brees as well. The selection of who would be on the cover this year was done through a fan voting, with the votes picking Drew Brees as the player that most fans wanted to see with that honor. Last year (with Madden NFL 2010) the cover was shared by Pittsburgh Steelers strong safety Troy Polamalu and Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. It is typically an honor that goes to someone that is hot in the NFL, or has had a lot of success the prior season, and Drew Brees has both going for him.
Along with the selection of the cover for Madden NFL 2011 will undoubtedly come the rumors that go along with the selection. There are many superstitious people out there who believe that the Madden cover is cursed, and that if someone appears on the cover of the game they are doomed to get injured that very season or suffer a severe downturn in their career. In the NFL players get hurt all the time, and because several players have been injured during the same season they were featured on the cover, it has given credence to those that believe in the curse. A few of those past injuries include Donovan McNabb, Shaun Alexander, Vince Young, and Troy Polamalu.
There is certainly a lot of time for people to play up the ‘Madden curse’ before the 2010 NFL regular season finally gets underway. Madden NFL 11 has a release date of August 10, 2010 scheduled, so that the game will be out right before the pre-season schedule begins. The reason the game comes out so close to the regular season is so that they can take into account all of the offseason moves that the teams will take between the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Plus, the 2010 NFL Draft still hasn’t happened, so there are seven rounds of players that could be on NFL rosters in the fall to account for. Expect Drew Brees to love being selected for the cover because it shows how many fans he has around the league.
