How to Make a Classic Martini

Vermouth, Vodka Martini

Martinis appear to be a very popular drink, especially in the movies and soap operas on television. Have you ever wondered how to make one of these drinks? If so, let me attempt to walk you through the process.

To begin with, we have to have the ingredients and supplies needed to make this drink. Gin, vermouth and an olive of lemon are the main ingredients. We will also need ice cubes and cocktail glasses. Yes, cocktail glasses are necessary for the sophisticated look that a Martini demands. Oh, we will also need a mixing glass and some stirrers to finish the drink with.

Now that the ingredients and supplies have been gathered for a Classic Martini, we can continue on with the mixing. In the glass mixing container add the ice cubes followed by 2 1/2 ounces of Gin and 1/2 ounce of Vermouth. Stir the gin, vermouth and ice cubes well. The ice cubes are also very important because the melted water they provide mellows the alcohol. Stirring the Classic Martini is always better than shaking it. A shaken martini will be cloudy looking and the gin tends to become bitter tasting. Not a good thing to have happen. The last step in making the Classic Martini is to pour the drink mixture into a cocktail glass, carefully straining the ice cubes while pouring. Finally, garnish the drink with an olive or with a lemon twist. Now enjoy your creation, but remember to always drink responsibly.

Alright, now you have mastered the Classic Martini, how about trying a different variety of Martini. A dry Martini is traditionally made by using French Vermouth while a very dry Martini is something totally different. To make a very dry Martini pour the vermouth into the chilled cocktail glass, swirl the vermouth around in the cocktail glass then pour out the vermouth and pour in chilled vodka. Garnish with an olive or two. A Gibson Martini is made just like a Classic Martini only it is garnished with a cocktail onion instead of an olive or lemon twist. Other variations to the Classic Martini are the Perfect Martini, which is made by using gin and half sweet vermouth and half dry vermouth and the Dirty Martini, which is made by adding a small amount of Olive Brine to the Classic Martini. The Gin can even be replaced with Vodka to create a Vodka Martini.

One other variation to the Classic Martini has become famous due to NBC’s soap opera Passions. This is the MarTimmy – named for Tabitha’s friend Timmy. A MarTimmy is a perfect drink for a shower or similar party. To make 12 servings, mix together 36 ounces of frozen lemonade, diluted, 1 bottle of ginger ale, 1 cup of frozen orange juice, thawed and diluted and 1 quart of cranberry juice cocktail. Mix all these ingredients well. Serve chilled in cocktail glasses and garnish with an orange slice.

Now you should be able to make a Classic Martini plus a few different variations to the Classic Martini, including one with no alcohol. Surely one will become a favorite.
