How to Bet on Baseball: Tips to Make You a Winner

A Team

A lot of people bet on football, but many skip baseball. It could be because there are new games everyday. Many people like to think about their bet for a while. It could be that they are busier in the summer months. Maybe people bet less on baseball because it is often during the week rather than only on weekends. Or maybe football is just more popular.

Whatever the reason, those who do bet on baseball find the odds can be riskier, but the profits can be steadier than football.

I’ve been betting baseball off and on for years, but I found a system that seems to work about 75 percent of the time. It means some studying and some patience. There will not be a chance to bet everyday. All the conditions must be right. But when they add up so will your profits.

The first thing as I said before is patience. Do not bet on baseball until at least mid May. Early in the seasons some teams are a flash in the pan. Players often do not come around until the weather is better. Cold, rainy weather can change outcomes. You want to bet when everything is in your favor. Losing stinks because rain shortened the game or a player threw a ball that slipped.

So, wait until at least mid May and only in good conditions and when players are able to be in top form.

It’s all about the pitcher. You never bet on a team. You bet on a pitcher. The pitcher in any game is 75 percent of the value. If you have a good starting pitcher, you have a good chance to win.

There are several things to watch. Has the pitcher played well on his previous game? That is a good sign. Is he suffering any injuries? That is a bad sign. Does the opposing team hit him well? You need to also study the opposing pitcher. You are looking for a pitcher who pitched well last game against a pitcher who did not.

When did the relievers pitch last? That is very crucial because chances are at least two relievers will be used. Has the closer pitched two days in a row? If he has, chances are he won’t be used today. Is there one special long reliever on the team? When was he last used?

What are the team’s records in the ballpark? Some teams like visiting fields. Some team’s only like their home field. You must check that statistic out. Don’t be afraid to bet a team playing away. Just be sure the team likes that field.

Is the first string team playing? Are there key injuries or is today the day some first stringers get the day off? This may take some research but it can be found out through the internet or pre-game shows. No one should bet a team when its best player is not playing. It seems like a no-brainer but you would be surprised how many people forget to check things like that out before betting.

Bet teams on a winning streak. A lot of people will say the team is good and lost the last game so it is due. Not so fast. Teams are streaky. Teams can win 16 of 18 games and then go 9-9 in their next 18. When a team is playing well, bet on them. One loss does not mean to stop. Two losses in a row means stop betting on them. If a team is on a streak and you can win with them 16 out of 18 times, why wouldn’t you. Watch for streaky teams and bet on them if they have won the game before. Ride them until the streak ends.

Bet on teams you know. A lot of people disagree with me on this tip. But the reason I do it is because I am more knowledgeable about that team. It does not mean bet on your favorite team. You may find that some days it is best to bet against them. Some days, don’t bet either way. Because you know all the statistics more than any other team you should know when to spot bet them. Never play them everyday because you are just rooting for your team. You need to bet on your team not wish them to win.

Check the odds before betting. The bet makers are not stupid. Sometimes, even if all the right things are intact, it may not be worth making a bet. Let’s say you are placing a $5 bet. If your return is $1.50, it is not worth the chance. If I cannot get at least $3 per a $5 bet, I will not place a bet. For some heavy gamblers, it may be worth it, but for me it’s not.

Check various places for lines. It is important to find more than one place to make a bet. The lines are different everywhere you bet. Find the one that is in your favor. You may also find a profit by betting both teams. Once in a while you can place a bet on a team and get odds that are in your favor. For instance, the Yankees are playing the Red Sox. In New York, the Yankees are favorite and in Boston, the Red Sox are favorite. You bet the Red Sox with New York bookies or casinos and you bet the Yankees on those that favor Boston. You may be able to bet both teams and make a profit no matter which team wins.

This happens with teams that are rivals often. Those are sure bets, and if you can find them, why not do them.

Betting the over and under line can be profitable. I love betting over and under. Unfortunately I am usually hooked on the over because until the last out, I know over is still a possibility. But this idea is wrong. It should be based on statistics and not what you like. I will bet the over if both pitchers have a high ERA and have played well last time out. I will play over if a team cannot use relief pitchers.

I will also play under if a team has key players not playing or both pitchers are very strong. One example of a pitcher to watch is Johann Santana. If he is playing well and his opposing pitcher is also good. I bet the under. Due to no designated hitters in the national league, I feel more comfortable playing the under there. Take that into consideration.

Avoid betting with points unless it is your favor. This may not make sense at first, but here is the basis. You have studied all the previous factors and have chosen a team. There are several ways to bet and I have outlined just playing a team to win outright. Casinos will also give you a team to win by 1 ½ runs or a team getting 1 ½ runs. If the team you want is getting runs, then bet it. If it is giving up runs forget it. Never give up runs. Winning is hard enough without winning by 2 runs. In football, this strategy is totally different, but avoid it in baseball.

There are also a lot of betting systems and gimmick betting available. Those gimmick bets include which team will score the most runs. Which player will hit the first home run in the game and similar bets. I call those sucker bets. They are great if you are betting for fun, but I bet to win.

If winning money is what you want, then follow my tips and make baseball betting profitable for you.
