THE WORST FIVE NAMES for GIRLS

Celebrity Children

First let us establish why we are all given names. Most obvious is to be able to differentiate one child from another within a family. When arriving at the given name parents either pick a name they like or in some instances will name their child after a relative or someone famous who they revere. Our given name is more important than just that, it is one of the influences that shape our personality and destiny, and it is who we become through the years and who we are throughout our lives.

Many parents want their babies to have trendy names. But trendy can sometimes be taken too far. In today’s world celebrities more often than not set the trends. This is especially true when celebrities have babies. Their pregnancies are given more than their share of coverage and when their babies are born their names are broadcast from coast to coast through all forms of media, i.e., television, radio, magazines and blogs. So it is no surprise that in search of the worst baby names for girls I turned to the children of celebrities. And it seems as though when naming your baby anything and everything from animate and inanimate objects to food seems to be acceptable. One can only guess what these parents were thinking when they gave these monikers to their babies.

Here are five that I think are the worst baby names for girls:

Honor Marie parents are Jessica Alba and Cash Warren Honor is their first born. She’s as gorgeous as her mother. And while it may have been an honor for Jessica to have Cash’s child I wish they could have come up with a better name. Honor is both a boys and girls name with Latin origins and means honour (respect or esteem); well at least she can use her middle name.

Jagger Joseph Blue Goldberg’s, parents are Soleil Moon Frye (Punky Brewster ) and Jason Goldberg. Just what kind of name is Jagger for a girl or a boy for that matter? Did anyone not tell Soleil that Joseph is a boys’ name? So is Jagger. This name has its origins in English and means Pedlars. I am so glad that I’m not saddled with this name.

Apple Blythe Alison was born to Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin. I love her middle name, Blythe and the name Alison; and I get it “Apple of their eyes” but really! I love Gwyneth she is a very good actress but don’t understand why she named her child after a piece of fruit. Oddly enough Apple is both a male and female name from English origin meaning just what the name implies Apple (a piece of fruit).

Rumer Glenn Willis is the daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. She was apparently named after author Margaret Rumer Godden. The best I’ve been able to ascertain is that the name Rumer is of Skavic origin and means a Gypsy.

Coco Cox daughter of Courtney Cox of Friendsand David Arquette. This name reminds me of a hot cup of cocoa. Coco is also a widely used name for pets. Coco originates from the Spanish/Portuguese and means coconut.

It really can be a lot of fun when choosing our babies names. There is nothing wrong with wanting an unusual name or one that is not commonly used; no one wants their child to be one of ten Mary’s in the class. But in our exuberance in finding just the right name for our child we must keep in mind that other children can be cruel; so too can adults. Remember your child will have to live with the name you pick for the rest of his/her life.

While the children of celebrities may get away with the names they’ve been given it’s because they go to private schools with other celebrity children whose names are often odd as well. In public school having an odd name is an open invitation to be picked on. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery but following the name trends set by celebrities may put your child at risk for unnecessary and traumatizing teasing.
