Home Remedies for Dogs’ Stomach Aches

Dog Weight, Home Remedies for Dogs, Pepto Bismol, Stomach Aches

There are a few known home remedies for canine stomach aches, but because every dog is different, you should always contact your local veterinarian beforehand. Describe the symptoms to the veterinarian, who can then give you an expert opinion on what to do. Even if you plan to treat your dog at home with any of these suggested home remedies, double check with the veterinarian.

Symptoms include (but are not limited to) diarrhea, flatulence, lethargy, weight gain or loss, and general discomfort.

Home remedies for a dog’s stomach ache include a few small spoonfuls of plain yogurt, mineral oil or Pepto Bismol (never in combination, of course). With yogurt, do not give it to the dog directly. Mix the yogurt in with the dog’s dry food. This will help balance the enzymes in the digestive tract. Also, be sure to check whether or not their food contains beet pulp or corn. If so, switch to another dry food, because these commonly cause stomach problems in dogs. Adding a small amount of mineral oil to their food can sometimes help as well. Add a few spoonfuls daily for a couple days (or until symptoms of stomach ache subside).

Treating animals Pepto Bismol is often debated. For some dog owners, it does the trick, just like in our own bodies. But for others, giving a dog a medicine intended for humans is a touchy subject. With the go-ahead from the veterinarian, a small amount of the stuff can really work wonders. If you do plan to try Pepto Bismol, try the pill form, since it is much easier to administer to the animal than liquid. If, however, you choose to use the liquid pink stuff, one teaspoon per five pounds (dog’s weight) is a good way to measure.

With all of these home treatments, it is a good idea to cut back on the amount of food you feed your dog. Do not starve the poor thing, but just pour a little bit less into their food bowl.

Your veterinarian may find that your dog’s stomach ache is one that will naturally pass, requiring no treatment at all. This is common, considering that many stomach aches are caused by eating something they should not have (grass, sticks, pebbles, bugs, etc.) or by cleaning themselves (by licking) and ingesting too much hair or fur.

Do your dog a favor and never treat an animal without veterinary approval. Since a dog cannot tell you how it feels, you cannot be 100% sure you are making an accurate diagnosis. In many cases, it is only gas.
