Her Sports & Fitness – Magazine Review

Fitness Magazine, Triathlons

Her Sports & Fitness, a bimonthly publication, offers most everything it’s similar cousins Fitness and Shape do, plus a lot more. What’s it missing?

You’ll notice it’s not as thick. That’s due to a lack of beauty, make-up, and other similar ads. Every other page does not scream you need make up or perfume or diet.

Instead, you get a refreshing glimpse at acceptance behind the pages. Athletic women are on the cover and pages in between. No super skinny tall models. Some are short, some are thin, some have a bit of pudginess around the middle, and none are “made up” with cosmetics. What a nice change!

You’ll find some drastic differences in content too. No how I lost 40 or more pounds in these issues. Very few beauty articles and what cosmetic articles do appear in their pages are in a practical no-nonsense format. Not pushy. Not pandering to the advertising dollars. More meat in these pages than fluff.

The main topics involve individualized sports such as running, biking, triathlons, and more. Support issues such as strength training, yoga, and a wide variety of other such practices complement the sport articles. Here, you’ll learn how to train, what to bring to your first race, what to do when your bike breaks, and how to avoid over-doing it.

Need inspiration? You’ll find that here. Every issue features the profile of a woman pursuing a sport, some are exceptional women who have overcome exceptional odds, others could be yourself or your next door neighbor. Either way, you’ll find guts and perseverance to help give you the kick in the butt we all sometimes need.

Nutrition graces the magazines in the forms of articles comparing energy bars, etc. (And with so many on the market, this article is a must read.) Again, the emphasis is on the practical.

The information packed into each issue is the kind that you can use and apply the same day. Articles aren’t strung out with more hype than sense.

Ever pick up a magazine because of an article on the cover only to read it and discover that the cover blurb was very misleading? Not here. The cover teasers lived up to their promises.

So if you’re serious about sports, or serious about trying sports, and tired of all that what color is in fluff stuff making up the majority of your other magazine, then Her Sports has the meat in it to be well worth subscribing. If you can’t find it locally, (try Borders or Barnes & Noble), you can Google them on the web and subscribe directly. You can also purchase individual issues for $6.00. (Subscription runs about $20 for a year – 6 issues.)
