Guide for Tourists Visiting Saratoga Springs, New York

Saratoga, Saratoga Springs

Even having grown up in the Saratoga Springs area, the beauty and abundance of things to do in the area still amazes me. During the summer months, the city comes alive, peaking in August with the opening of the horse track. It truly is a sight to behold. If you’re considering a trip to Saratoga, here are a few favorite recommendations from a former resident.

Shopping
If shopping is what tickles your fancy, walk Broadway in downtown Saratoga Springs. There you will find stores and one of a kind shops that cater to anything you could hope to find. Don’t forget to wander down some of the side streets to find even more shops.

Dining
While shopping on Broadway, be sure to stop in for lunch at Lillian’s Restaurant. Named after Lillian Russell who is said to have been the longtime lady friend of Diamond Jim Brady and summer resident of Saratoga, you’re sure to find something to tempt your palate on Lillian’s lunch menu. Reasonable prices and great food make it a must for your to do list.

For dinner, try the Olde Bryan Inn, just a short drive off Broadway. The Olde Bryan Inn offers a colonial atmosphere rich in history with delectable food. The present day building is built on the actual site of a log cabin inn owned by Alexander Bryan, a Revolutionary scout. Rumors and stories also abound about a ghostly figure named Eleanor. Be sure to keep an eye out for the mysterious lady in a long green dress.

Whenever I go back to New York, I try to fit in Sunday brunch at the Gideon Putnam Hotel. Set up as an all you can eat buffet with food to die for, you’re sure to walk away from the Gideon happy. Fresh fruits, eggs, bacon and sausage combined with breads and pastries, hand carved meats and seafood are laid out before you. The Gideon Putnam Hotel shows you that you can have it all.

Entertainment
One of the things Saratoga Springs is famous for is the horse track. If you’ve decided to visit Saratoga in August while the track is open, a trip to the races is an absolute must. It is family friendly and kids are welcome. Check out their website for “giveaway” days. Even if you don’t feel the need to gamble, I can
guarantee that you’ll enjoy watching all the people, horses and bustle of activity. Be prepared to pay for parking, do a little bit of walking and a lot of standing. But it’s worth it!

If you have been bit by the gambling bug, check out the Racino located at the Harness Track. The Racino offers an abundance of slot machines and several dining options. It is open all year.

If you’re a music lover and plan to visit Saratoga in the summer months, look into seeing a concert at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, known to the natives as SPAC. SPAC offers something for everyone, such as rock concerts, ballet and opera. Their website offers a calendar of events.

Health and History
Saratoga Springs is an area rich in history. It is also famous for its spring water. If you would like a little relaxation, plan some time at the Lincoln Bath House in the Saratoga Spa State Park. You can relax in a warm effervescent bath and get a massage by a licensed massage therapist to top off your visit. You’re sure to feel revitalized.

Another great option for a taste of history is to visit the Canfield Casino in Congress Park, located in downtown Saratoga Springs. The Canfield Casino houses the Saratoga Springs History Museum. Take some time to learn about the history of Saratoga and what makes this place so special.

The visitor center and tour of the battlefield will walk you through various key points of what was the turning point of the Revolutionary War. It’s a great lesson in history that can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Lodging
If you really want to make the most of your visit to Saratoga Springs, consider staying at the Gideon Putnam Hotel located in the State Park. It offers spa packages at the Roosevelt Baths and Spa, in addition to fine dining, such as the previously mentioned Sunday brunch. However, Saratoga has many other lodging options available to fit any budget. Shop around to find the best deal for you.

Transportation
There are many choices for transportation if needed, including taxi and limo services and car rentals. Also be sure to check out Saratoga Horse and Carriage Company for an enjoyable carriage ride.

Whether you’re making your trip to Saratoga Springs for a day, a week or a month, you’re sure to find something to entertain. I can guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
