Golden Curry Sauce Mix by S & B: Review

Curry, Glutamate, Monosodium Glutamate

A good curry is hard to come by unless you visit a good restaurant or you know how to make one from scratch. After watching Rachel Ray make her family version of a curry recently, I was not at all impressed. When there is no restaurant nearby or you cannot cook a curry from scratch, there is always Golden Curry Sauce Mix by S & B.

While visiting some friends recently, they made me a delicious curry with rice. It tasted homemade, but I later learned that it had come out of a box. Golden Curry Sauce Mix by S & B is a product of Japan and comes in a 100g (3.5oz) box. There are 5 recommended servings in every packet.

Cooking Directions

It is simple to cook Golden Curry Sauce Mix by S & B. To make 5 servings, cube 1 ½ lb of lean beef, chicken, lamb or shrimp and finely chop 1 onion. Brown the meat and onion in a pan for 3 minutes. At this point add a selection of other desired vegetables such as carrots, celery and green pepper.

Add 2 ½ cups of water and then bring the ingredients to a boil. Simmer for 10 minutes or until the meat is tender. When the meat is tender, add Golden Curry Sauce Mix by S & B to the pan and simmer for 5 minutes. Serve with rice.

Ingredients

The ingredients in this curry mix include wheat flour, palm oil, canola oil, salt, sugar, curry powder, monosodium glutamate and other ingredients. This is a medium hot curry, so if you can only handle a mild curry, you might find Golden Curry Sauce Mix by S & B too much. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a food addictive intended to enhance the taste and flavour of food. It is found in many processed foods. Many people choose to avoid this substance due to concern about a link with MSG and obesity as well as other health concerns.

Nutrition

There are 100 calories in every 20g serving of Golden Curry Sauce Mix by S & B, 4g of saturated fat, 820mg of sodium, 1g of fibre, 2g of sugar and 1g of protein. The calorie content in every serving is not tremendously high, but the saturated fat content and sodium levels are extremely high. The sodium alone is equivalent of 34% of a person’s daily allowance!

Taste

Even though the nutrition information shows that this product is high in fat and sodium, it is still very tasty. After a single helping, it is tempting to go back for seconds.

Recommendation

As this product is so high in fat and sodium, I would only recommend it for occasional consumption. It is not the healthiest of meal options. But if you increase the vegetables you add to the pan and reduce or eliminate meat altogether, the better the nutrition value will be.
