Glass Fencing: Is It for You?

Fencing

It may seem like two odd words to put together “glass” and “fence”, but glass fencing is quickly becoming one of the hottest trends in backyard enclosures. Typically used around pool and spa areas, glass fencing works just like any other required pool enclosure fencing by keeping kids and pets from accidentally wandering into the pool area. But glass fence takes it one step further than conventional pool fencing by disappearing from the scene entirely-instead of making one.

Glass Fence101

Most glass fencing is installed with as little “un-glass” parts as possible. This way, the area you’re trying to enclose looks open and free from clutter. Some glass fence styles are so simple; they are just glass panels with a small bracket that secures them to the ground. This illusion of a delicate barricade is truly a farce; glass fence is one of the strongest materials on the planet. Thick and stout tempered glass is superior in strength to aluminum, fiberglass and even wood fencing-think of the glass railing at any two story mall and you know its durability. This is just one more reason why this building material is becoming more popular in the residential building industry.

Glass Prices

With all of this added strength and looks to match, you’d think more people would be using this railing all over their homes and businesses. Well that’s where you’d be wrong! Glass railing is the most expensive to buy and install, putting it out of reach for most homeowners on a budget. It’s also not DIY friendly material so saving money on labor costs isn’t going to happen. Average costs for a 160 linear foot (40×40 pool) glass fence is somewhere in the $10,000-$20,000 range depending upon the style of fencing you choose, the region you live in (building codes) and the availability of suppliers and installers in that region. Be sure that you check your local building department before getting a price quote-you may find that only certain (or none!) glass fence materials can be used in your area.

Tips for Hiring a Glass Fence Installer

If you’ve got the money-it’s a wonderful addition to any home or business. With that said, hiring the wrong glass fence contractor can ensure that you’re going to hate the job from beginning to end. Ask the following questions and you’ll be sure to get the best glass fence installation in your area.

  • · Will I have to pay more for odd angles, curves or small sections?
  • · Does the fee include removal, grading or disposal of the existing fence?
  • · What grade of glass fence am I getting and are there other options available?
  • · Will the price change if I get a bid during the slower seasons?
  • · Does the bid price include all fasteners, railings, connecters and posts?
