Fusion Restaurant- an Interesting Dining Choice in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn

Coconut Shrimp

Fusion Restaurant is a unique dining choice if you are visiting Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn, New York. The restaurant is on Emmons Avenue, right along the waterfront. It is nicely nestled in a row of other restaurants, and stands out because of its appealing look….

Sheepshead Bay is a nice place to go in Brooklyn, New York. You can take in the salt water air, and walk along the strip of restaurants and shops. You’ll see the ships in the dock and setting sail…. The area gives a very relaxing feeling.

The great thing about the Sheepshead Bay area is that there are many restaurants, catering to different tastes. They are everywhere over about an eight block stretch. One that caught my eye was Fusion Restaurant, so I decided to dine there.

Fusion caught my eye for a couple of reasons. The atmosphere was different than the other restaurants- it looked innovative and modern. Dance music was playing in the background. The meals were being served on square white china. The place just seemed hip and cool. I instantly brought the feeling to mind of a hip club or restaurant in Miami- that was the feel.

Setting and Location

Fusion is located on Emmons Avenue, right across from the water. This is in the Sheepshead Bay area of Brooklyn, New York. It can be reached by car, train or bus. If you dine here, you can choose to sit outside and watch the people walking by and catch glimpes of ships across the way. The ambience is great, being able to enjoy the fresh air as the wind blows by, while also listening to the music playing in the background. Fusion is not only a restaurant, but also a dance club. As the night goes on, people begin to get up and dance once finishing their meals. There is also a bar area, where you can sit at the bar and just have a drink.

Food and Prices

The food at this restaurant is different than the standard American fare. Each menu item is a creation in itself! When you see your plate of food, you instantly know that thought went into every part of the plate presentation and the creation of the food as well. The menu is not large, but there is an adequate selection. Mostly you will find seafood items and some chicken and ribs. (The bonus to dining here is that you can also order from the New York Steakhouse restaurant’s menu when you sit outside, the restaurant next door. Very interesting. Most of the selections on this menu are steaks!)

There are a large number of appetizers available. Most of them are in my opinion big enough to make into a meal. I ordered the coconut shrimp appetizer as a meal, with the Fusion Salad. Needless to say, I was unable to finish everything. The coconut shrimp with ponzu sauce appetizer was $14, and the fusion salad was $11. I was somewhat disappointed with my meal. The coconut shrimp only had a light taste of coconut, unlike what I have experienced at other restaurants. The ponzu sauce didn’t really have much flavor. Some might like this, but I didn’t care much for it. As for the fusion salad, this was pretty good. It was a mix of baby greens. The dressing had somewhat of a spicy ginger flavor. It was decent. The salad came with some type of seafood on the four corners of the plate. I didn’t ask, but I think it was snow crab leg meat out of the shell. It had a good flavor.

I found the salad selection limited. None of the salads came without seafood, even the fusion salad. Other choices, ranging from $16 to $21 included the sashimi salad, with tuna, salmon and yellowtail in a ginger/ citrus soy sauce, a lobster salad of mixed greens, and a duck salad confit with chicory lettuce and sesame dressing. Other hot appetizers, from $11 to $18, included crab cakes, glazed baby ribs, sesame calamari, and a shrimp spring roll. I would recommend the glazed baby ribs for anyone not caring for seafood.

As for the meals, the Fusion menu only had six entrees. These went from $21 to $26. I recommend the sea bass or kobe beef. Other menu items were red snapper in a white wine sauce, grilled scallop with lobster risotto, and shrimp in a house cream sauce.

Service and Experience

The waitresses are all young women, which is definitely a draw for the crowd. On weekend evenings, even very late into the night at midnight, the restaurant is crowded. The waitresses get very busy. They do their best to give great service, and they are all nice. It can take a few minutes to get a drink refill. The managers were helping out by taking initial drink orders. There were also men in black that I assume were bouncers for the dance part of the establishment. They were standing outside along the street beside those dining curbside, and a couple were inside the club part itself. There seemed to be a large number of staff available. Everyone seemed to be helpful.

The experience is what makes it worthwhile to come to the restaurant. The ability to dine and then dance in one place is a plus. The music is enjoyable, and everyone inside dancing seems to get along. You could find yourself dancing with people you don’t know and making new friends. The environment is positive.

Overall

The restaurant is worth visiting, for the ambience and new-age feel. The staff is friendly and helpful. The menu is somewhat limited, and hard to please if you don’t enjoy seafood. The dancing is an added draw. I would recommend coming here and having drinks and dancing, and just for the experience itself.
