Fresh Step Scoopable Cat Litter: A Review

Cat Litter, Keeping Litter Box Fresh, Odor Control

If you have a cat, or are thinking of getting one, one of your concerns is undoubtedly the litter box. Perhaps you have a cat litter you like, or maybe you aren’t sure what to get. The options for cat litter are seemingly endless, so to give you some insight on one, I’ve decided to write a review on Fresh Step Scoopable cat litter.

Overview of Fresh Step Brand Cat Litters

Fresh Step cat litter is sold in many different forms. There is the clay litter, the clumping litter, and the crystal litter. In the clumping litter, there are different formulas as well – the regular, scented or non-scented, natural, multiple-cat and blended litters. The product that I will review in this article is the regular Fresh Step Scoopable cat litter.

Fresh Step Scoopable litter comes in a few sizes, 14, 20, 25, 34 and 42 pound boxes. Each is packaged in a cardboard container.

The Great Things about This Litter

There are definitely good things to be said about this litter.

First of all, it clumps quite well, making it easy to shovel out of the box. The only clumps to watch out for are the ones that seem to adhere to the litter box liner, which can break apart when being scooped. If removed carefully, however, these clumps are easier to get out of the box intact.

Second of all, Fresh Step doesn’t have an overpowering smell. Some litters do, and some cats have a problem with it, so they might start to avoid the box if the smell of the litter bothers them.

Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, the odor control that Fresh Step Scoopable Litter provides is unmatched. In comparison with other cat litters I tried, this litter outperformed them all in odor control. My cat can use her litter box several times before I start to notice a smell around the box, and if scooped often, the smell is even harder to detect.

The Not So Great Things about This Litter

As with anything, there is a positive and a negative side. In the case of Fresh Step Scoopable cat litter, I can only think of two downsides to this product – the price and the dust.

Fresh Step claims to be practically dust-free, but I have found this to not be the case. It is rather dusty when poured from the box. If you have allergies, or even if you don’t, it may be advisable to leave the room while the dust settles, or wear an allergy mask. This doesn’t take long, and stepping out of the room or wearing an allergy mask is a small price to pay to prevent an allergy attack.

Fresh Step Scoopable cat litter is, admittedly, not the cheapest cat litter on the market. Fresh Step litter is available at most stores that sell pet products. Petco has the litter on its website in the price range of $8.49 to $19.11.

Another Perk of Using Fresh Step

Something else to consider when purchasing Fresh Step cat litter, is the Paw Points program. Each box of Fresh Step comes with a code that you can enter in on the Paw Points website, after you sign up for free with your e-mail and a password. The points are redeemable for quite a bit of stuff, from things for your cat(s) to a donation to the ASPCA. The more points you accumulate, the more rewards you can get.

With all the cat litters on the market, choosing one that you and your cat(s) like can be a bit overwhelming. If you are looking for a clumping cat litter with exceptional odor control, can handle some dust and are willing to pay a little extra, I would definitely recommend Fresh Step Scoopable Litter.
