This free pattern is simple enough for a beginner, but pretty enough to please everyone. It is a very warm scarf with a bumpy-like texture to it that works up quickly in a very simple crochet stitch. Perfect for last minute gift items or to sell at craft fairs, the pattern is suitable for a man, woman or child. Be creative with your yarn color choices for a whole new look.

I prefer using three coordinating colors of yarn for this scarf pattern. You may use two colors of yarn for a slightly different effect. I don’t think a single color scarf crocheted using this pattern would show the texture of the pattern well. The photo here shows a scarf I made using black, white and gray yarn. I use a standard 4-ply worsted weight yarn for this crochet pattern. The bumpy texture resulting from the stitches used makes it a fairly thick scarf. I think a heavier weight yarn would result in a scarf that was too thick, but of course you may experiment with whatever yarn you have on hand.
Crochet Stitches Used
Ch =chain
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
TC = treble/triple crochet
Foundation chain is multiple of 3 + 1
Starting ch of 196 with size I crochet hook will result in a scarf of approx 74″ in length
For a shorter scarf, decrease foundation chain by increments of 3
Row 1: *SC in second ch from hook, DC in next ch, TC in next ch*, repeat across row, ending with TC in last st, break off. Attach color B, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: SC in first st, DC in next stitch, TC in next st, repeating across row, ending with TC in turning ch, break off. (You will be doing a SC in the TC of the previous row, DC in the DC of previous row, and TC in SC of previous row). Attach color C, ch 1, turn.
Repeat row 2, alternating colors A, B, and C until you have 10 rows, ending with color A.
Weave in ends.
