When I first saw the word amigurumi on the list for crochet at Google Keywords, I wasn’t sure what the name meant and what it had to do with crocheting.
After doing a little search for the free amigurumi patterns, I realized what the word meant. Amigurumi is using the Japanese art of crocheting. When using the Japanese art of crocheting, you will be making crochet small animals, dolls, and toys.
All the crocheting is done in a single crochet in rounds while the rounds are never joined. This is due to the fact they are crocheted in a spiral. This is the basics of the art of Japanese crocheting.
Why the Different Name?
The name for this type of crocheting is different from one is use to in, let’s say, the United States. From what I have noticed in my lifetime, different cultures, like in the United States, crochet differently than those in Japan.
Many of the crocheted patterns I have used require a back and forth motion used in items like afghans, sweaters, scarves, booties for babies, and other similar items. Even if you are crocheting tissue box covers there is yet another technique required to make those. For example, the picture of the Kleenex Tissue Box Cover Crochet New, White with Pink Trim is done in rows with a decrease and increase in stitches rather than the increase and decrease in the arigurumi spiral technique.
