This fall craft is very easy to complete and it’s a good craft to make with your kids. They will need adult help, but there are plenty of steps they can help with.

To make a coffee can scarecrow, you will need an empty coffee can, some tan fabric or felt (you can also use construction paper if you need to), a scrap of orange fabric for the nose, buttons for the eyes, twine for the mouth, raffia or straw for hair, and a hat as a finishing touch. You will also need basic craft supplies like glue, scissors, etc. If you are going to put the scarecrow on the porch, you might also want something to weigh down the can such as a rock or brick.

Place a rock or brick inside the coffee can (if you want to weigh it down) and put the lid on the can. The lid will be the top of the head. Then cut tan fabric or felt to fit all around the can. Add a generous amount of white glue to the can and glue on the fabric. Construction paper can be used if you don’t have glue, but fabric will give the project a much more professional look.

After you glue the fabric on, glue on two buttons for the eyes. You can use buttons that don’t match for a more raggedy scarecrow look. Then glue on scrap of orange fabric for the nose. Cut the fabric in the shape of a long triangle and glue it on with the point facing up. Glue a long piece of twine in a smiling curve for the mouth. Then cut short pieces of twine and glue them across the smile in a stitch like fashion (see here).

Stand up your coffee can and add a generous amount of glue to the coffee can lid. Add raffia or straw to the lid to create hair. If you do not have raffia or straw, you can use any long grass, vines or weeds that you have in your yard. Then apply more glue to the top of the hair and glue on the hat. If you don’t want to use glue on the hat, you can always pin down the hat with some straight pins. You can decorate the hat any way you want by adding flowers, a bird, a butterfly or whatever you can dream up!

If you want a mini versions of this scarecrow, you can use empty vegetable cans or empty frosting tubs. For small scarecrows you can use yarn for the hair and you can make small hats out of construction paper or newspaper.
