Dolly Madison Zingers vs. Hostess Twinkies

Food Writer, Hostess, Twinkies

While at a newsstand in downtown Hartford, Connecticut last week, I happened to notice a new display rack filled with various types of snack cakes. Many of the snack items were Dolly Madison brand products, which are always very tasty. When I saw that Dolly Madison Zingers were among the items on display, I decided to buy a package of them.

For many years, I have been a big fan of Dolly Madison Zingers, which look and taste very much like Hostess Twinkies. I am also a fan of Hostess Twinkies and I think that an article which compares and reviews the two brands of vanilla creme – filled snack cakes would be of interest to hungry consumers.

Presented here, in an effort to assist the consumer, is one food writer’s product comparison review of Dolly Madison Zingers and Hostess Twinkies.

Size
The net weight of the regular single – serving package of Hostess Twinkies is three ounces (85 grams). The package contains two snack cakes, which constitute one serving. Each Twinkie is approximately three inches in length and one inch wide.

The net weight of the single serving package of Dolly Madison Zingers is 3.75 ounces. This package contains four snack cakes, double the number of Hostess Twinkies in the single serving package. Each of these snack cakes is a little bit smaller than a Twinkie and all four cakes are considered one serving.

Price
The regular retail price charged for one three ounce, single – serving package of Hostess Twinkies at Hartford, Connecticut area pharmacies, convenience stores and other food retailers ranges between $1.29 and $1.49.

Texture
Both Hostess Twinkies and Dolly Madison Zingers possess soft and spongy cake textures that are accentuated by sweet and flavorful creme fillings. To me, Hostess Twinkies are a little lighter and spongier than the Zingers, but the Zingers seem to have a little more creamy filling. At any rate, both of these brands of creme – filled snack cakes offer pleasant textures that make eating them very enjoyable.

Taste / Flavor
As I write this article, I am eating a package of Dolly Madison Zingers and I also consumed a two – pack of Hostess Twinkies a few days ago, so the flavors of these products are fresh in my conciousness. These two brands of snack cakes, in my humble opinion, taste very similar. Both brands of snack cakes are made with yellow cake and white creme filling and are quite sweet. It would be very hard for me to say that one of these snack cakes tastes better than the other, because of their similarities. What I can say, is that both of these snack cakes are very tasty.

Packaging
Dolly Madison Zingers and Hostess Twinkies are both packaged in clear plastic wrappers and each brands’ cakes sit on cardboard sleeves, to help keep them intact. The wrappers are attractively – designed and also list all relevant ingredient and nutritional information. The Hostess Twinkie single – serving pack contains two cakes and the Dolly Madison single – serving pack contains four cakes.

Overall Rating
All things considered, Dolly Madison Zingers and Hostess Twinkies are flavorful, oblong – shaped snack cakes that are similar in taste and appearance. From an economic point of view, the Dolly Madison Zingers are more of a bargain, but both brands are recommended by this food writer.
