Lovely flowers, bright green grass and fluttering butterflies are all images of spring. Welcome spring with some wonderful spring picture books for children. These books feature topics like growing plants and the caterpillar to butterfly transformation. Check out some of these children’s books about springtime to complement your next spring themed lesson.

Flower Garden By Eve Bunting

This rhythmical book tells the story of a girl and her father who visit the supermarket in search of flowers. They get the flowers and other gardening supplies and then take the bus back through their urban neighborhood to their apartment. Then, they proceed to make a garden box as a present for the mother. The lively tone and oil painting illustrations are another plus. This book is good for kids four to eight. There is also a bilingual version.

Planting a Rainbow by Lois Ehlert

This colorful book teaches about flowers and gardening. The pictures show a rainbow of flowers. Not only do kids learn about planting seeds and bulbs, they learn about nurturing their garden.

From Seed to Plant by Gail Gibbons

Great for teaching about how plants grow, From Seed to Plant also discusses how plants reproduce, pollinate and disperse seeds. In addition, there are detailed pictures and kids can learn about many different types of flowers.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

This is a classic book that all children should read. A little caterpillar is very hungry and eats all types of foods. There are many forms to this book. You can actually see the holes in the pages where the caterpillar ate through the food. It also talks about the days of the week and shows the caterpillar going into a cocoon. At the end, he turns into a beautiful butterfly. For the very youngest child, you can get a small board book. There are paperback and popup versions too.

My, Oh My–A Butterfly!: All About Butterflies by Tish Rabe

This book is from the Cat and The Hat Learning Library. Kids who like The Cat in the Hat will immediately identify with the pictures. This book features The Cat and the Hat and his friends Sally and Dick. In their backyard, they get to see the metamorphosis of an egg into a caterpillar. Along with the transformations, kids get to learn about migration and other interesting facts about the butterfly.
