Located on the west side of Elgin, just south of Route 20, the Elgin Fox Theatre boasts 15 screens with stadium seating. Every weekend the biggest new movie gets shown on the UltraScreen, a three story tall, 75 foot wide movie screen with a matching height of stadium seating and digital surround sound. The busiest times at Elgin Fox Movie Theatre are Friday and Saturday nights. Arrive early for premiere UltraScreen movies to get good seats; anything on the floor level is way too close and your eyes won’t be able to track the big screen fast enough to catch all the action.
Elgin Fox movie theaters have an expansive concession stand including popcorn, candy, soda, pretzel bites and nachos. Easy to see on the east side of Randall Road, the Randall 16 was recently renovated into the Randall 15 IMAX movie theater. A new facade was added, as well as stadium seating for many of the existing screens. The Randall 15 also has a well-stocked concession stand, with actual real butter on their popcorn.
The Randall 15 movie theater draws a big teenage crowd on Friday and Saturday nights, and stays fairly busy all weekend. The parking lot is also a bit tricky, as you must enter at the back of theater and then drive toward the front. Be wary of confused drivers wandering in all directions. Tucked into the back of the Charlestowne Mall, the Charlestowne 18 Theater requires a bit of a walk to get to. Parking in the lot behind the mall, you’ll walk across an expansive paved entranceway to enter into the mall. Halfway down that hall, you turn into another hall, and walk to the end of that to reach the back of the ticket booth. The front of the mall is also labeled as a theater entrance, but you’ll have to walk through the mall and then down the escalator or a flight of stairs to get to the box office.
The Charlestowne 18 movie theater has stadium seating and digital sound. There’s also a concession stand with free refills on all popcorn and fountain drinks. There are two party rooms for kids and theater rentals for corporate or private events. Adults: $8.00 from 6pm on/$5.00 between 4-5:59pm/ $5.50 matinee. Children and seniors, $5.50 all day. This giant expanse of a multiplex boasts 30 screens, multiple concession stands, stadium seating, and 3D film options. Be prepared to walk several blocks to get to your movie. The parking lot has numerous handicapped parking spots that take up the entire front half of the lot, a large entranceway and multiple ticket windows, followed by a large foyer, then the lobby, then two hallways of theaters that extend in opposite directions. Luckily, there are plenty of bathrooms along the way.
Since the AMC South Barrington 30 has so many theaters to play with, you’ll often find the art house films playing here that other theaters won’t carry. They also keep some movies long after they’ve left other local spots, so the AMC South Barrington is a great place to catch up with all the films you want to see. As its name suggests, the Streets of Woodfield Mall is located just across the street from the giant shopping mall Woodfield. The AMC Loews Streets of Woodfield 20 movie theater is best arrived at off of Martingale Road, where you can swing right into a parking garage directly across from the front of the theater. This is a busy theater and busy mall, though, so be prepared to drive a ways before finding a spot. Be cautious crossing from the garage to the theater as well, as traffic coming in off of Martingale can be going pretty fast.
The AMC Loews Streets of Woodfield 20 movie theater is two stories high, with concession stands on both floors (though sometimes the one up top is closed). The lines for tickets can get crazy on weekends, but take a look around for the ticket machines right in the lobby.
