Best Skirts for Women Who Travel

Orvis

For women who travel, having one or two comfy, hassle-free skirts is must. Personally, I always choose skirts over pants or dresses for travel and traveling in North America, Europe, and the Middle East last year gave me some better insight into what good travel skirt should be. In the perfect world, the ideal travel skirt would be the one that doesn’t wrinkle, stain or show dirt, keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer, is easy to wash and quick drying, a style you can wear with a blouse or a t-shirt, a color goes with most of your clothes, fashionable enough for city wear yet comfy for rural travel and modest enough to let you enter religious sites. Nice dream, right? Well, while I’ve yet to find a skirt that can fill all those requirements, I have tracked down a few designs that come close. Here’s where you can buy some of these great travel skirts online.

Magellan’s Jet Set Skirt

This design has just about everything you could want in a travel skirt. The fabric is a blend of 92% polyester and 8% spandex, so it’s lightweight, moves fluidly, can be hand washed and dries quickly, and resists wrinkles. It’s also brushed to be soft to the touch, unlike a lot of polyester fabrics. As a bonus, the front panel is designed to comfortably hold in your tummy and give you a trimmer figure. The hem falls to a few inches above the ankles. This skirt is comes in sizes XS to XXL, colors black and taupe, and goes for $79.50 at Magellan’s.

Women’s Ultimate Travel Skirt from Travelsmith

Is it really the “ultimate” of all skirts for women who travel? Well, pretty close. The polyester-nylon twill is strong and hand-washable, but also soft and lightweight. It’s a good choice for hot climates because it’s specially treated to wick moisture away from your skin. That also means it dries fast after you wash it. The style itself is simple enough to look good with a variety of tops and blouses. You can get this skirt in several colors, sizes 4 to 26W, for $64 at Travelsmith. Just be aware that this is a popular model that sells out fast, so if you want one, grab it when you see it.

Passport Travel Fabric Skirt from Orvis

This skirt stands out for its unusual fabric texture. The nubby tweed boucle it is created from a blend of man-made fabrics. The black is acetate/spandex and the black and white tweed is polyester/rayon. These fabrics also make this travel skirt stretchy, soft, and easy to wash. The skirt is 34″ and comes in sizes S through XL and is available at Orvis for $69.

Women’s Long Costa Skirt from Patagonia

The Patagonia company may be known for their tough outdoor clothing and gear, but they make some attractive clothes for city life, too. Their Costa skirt is a casual, yet stylish design great for long flights, tours in the rain, or trips on less than spotless transportation. Unlike a lot of travel skirts, this one actually has usable pockets. It’s marketed as a great skirt for parts of the world where modesty is appreciated, but the reality is the 12″ slits up the side detract from the skirt’s modesty. Also, while the slits make walking easier most of the time, they can be a real annoyance on windy days. For $60, you can get this skirt in grey or pumice and sizes XS to XL.

Savvy Chic Skirt from Ex Officio

Sick of long skirts? Here’s a good travel skirt that shows a little skin. This knee-length tulip-cut design will flatter any figure. The fabric is what they call Scrunch Cloth, a blend of rayon, polyester, and spandex, which is designed to be light, pack tight, and resist wrinkles. Another plus is the hidden pocket that’s conveniently big enough to hold your passport. You can choose between black and rosewood (dark red) and sizes small through XL. This skirt usually goes for around $50, so the price of $27 at TravelEssentials.com is hard to beat.

While you may not find them on the mainstream clothing store sites, there are plenty of specialist sites that sell quality skirts for women who travel. All of these sites mentioned here have several designs of travel skirts in various lengths, colors, and fabrics, so if these five models don’t appeal to you, take a few minutes to browse the rest of the site.
