Independence Day (1996)
The start of summer is interrupted by UFOs seen around the world. Will Smith stars as a jet pilot who is a crucial link in saving the day. It will take the government, secret programs, the President, scientists and a lot of guts to save the world. But with the aliens having ships as big as buildings, is it even possible? This is one of the best movies starring Will Smith because many people remember this film. It is one of my favorites because it was a major breakout film for Will Smith. When I went to see this film July 3 1996, I had to wait all day to see it. I walked up to the movie theater eager to buy my ticket, and there was a line almost circling the block. And it was three to four people WIDE. It was very popular back in the day, and the movie was spectacular. Who could forget the scene when Will’s character punches an alien right in his face? Then he says, “Welcome to Earth.” A CLASSIC line.
Ali (2001)
Will Smith stars in this film as Muhammad Ali, the legendary boxer. It shows his early days when he was named Cassius Clay, his name change, and the turmoil of his life in later years. This is a great film showing the more serious side of the actor. This made my list of great Will Smith movies because it was like watching Ali himself on the screen. Confident, loud and unwavering in anything he did, just like Ali. And the acting is great. I also put this on my list because this film is severely underrated. Will Smith doesn’t have to make jokes or run around in all his movies. There are very subtle things that he does in the film that make you believe he is not acting at all. This movie shows what Will Smith is capable of.
Hancock (2008)
A reluctant, sarcastic, often drunk superhero is hated by the city in which he protects. He saves the life of a public relations worker, and he tries to make Hancock look favorable in the people’s eye with a new look. It is a struggle and not easy, but just when things turn around Hancock meets the wife of the public relations worker……and things get turned upside down. This film is probably one of the most underrated movies with Will Smith. Many people say that it’s just some attempt to cash in on his name. Far from it. This is one of my favorites because this role was perfect for him. In most of his films, Will is a clean-cut individual, well dressed, joking or blowing something up. When was the last time you saw him in a film when he is unshaven, cursing, and not liked? Will is all of that in this film. In the first scene of the movie, you don’t know whether to call him a jerk or a hero. Throughout the whole film he is always questioning who he is, and trying to understand people. Not your typical Will Smith movie.
Men in Black (1997)
Part of a secret government agency Will Smith stars as J, an agent that tracks down alien life forms. One day on the job, he discovers a plot that involves all of New York City. One of the best movies with Will Smith, this film has all of his personality in his character. Fans of Will Smith easily recall this movie as one of his best because everything flowed so well in the film. This movie is hilarious, full of action and aliens. Even though it is full of special effects and a great cast, what really stands out is Will, with his jokes.
Six Degrees of Separation (1993)
A young man visits a couple saying he is the son of Sidney Poitier. Impressed, they take him in. But in reality he is a con artist milking the wealthy couple to live well. This is Will Smith’s first major role in a film, and even back in 1993, he had the stuff to act. To come from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and right to movies was an easy transition for Will Smith. if he didn’t do so well, this wouldn’t have made it on the list as a great Will Smith movie. I have yet to see this film, but it keeps popping up when I browse for films.
