Best Apple Pie Baking Top Secrets

Apple Pie, Pie Crust Recipe, Pie Dough, Pie Recipes

Baking the best apple pie is all about having a flaky crust, the right amount of cinnamon and the perfect apple pie filling. It’s a classic fall dessert.

The perfect apple pie also needs the right toppings available such as ice cream, whipped cream, pecans or walnuts and hot or cold caramel sauce.

Here are some tips for making a favorite fall dessert, the ultimate apple pie:

No. 1: Use a variety of apples. Choose tart apples such as Granny Smith, and mix it in with apples that are juicier and sweeter. Peel the apples and slice them into thin pieces. Make sure to purchase enough apples depending if you are making an 8 inch or 10 inch pie. Also, deep dish apple pies require more apples.

No. 2: Use your stove top. Mix together cinnamon and sugar and a little bit of flour, according to your apple pie recipe. But instead of pouring the apple pie filling mixture into a pie crust, cook it in a non-stick skillet on the stove first instead. Add a little water if necessary. The goal is to soften the apples before baking the pie so you have a filling that melts more in your mouth instead of a crunchy texture. You can add more cinnamon and sugar, according to taste desires. I usually cook on stove for 10 minutes, but you can taste-test. The apples will cook more in oven.

No. 3: Bake the flakiest pie crust ever. The secret to a flaky pie crust is to use ice-cold water. Add several ice cubes to a cup of water and let it become super icy cold before using in your pie crust recipe. Buying a store-bought pie crust is not acceptable for making the ultimate apple pie! Even if you have to try several times, keep working on perfecting a homemade pie crust. It’s worth it. I use flour, salt, vegetable shortening and ice cold water.

No. 4: Create a spacious work space. Flour your board or use wax paper for rolling out your pie crust. Flour your rolling pin so it does not stick. Do not overwork the dough. The difference between making pizza dough and pie dough is that pizza dough may be handled, thrown, punched and tossed, but pie dough needs to be touched as little as possible.

No. 5: Get creative by making pie lattice on top of the apple pie. After you have put your bottom layer of pie dough into the pan and filled it with the apple pie filling from the stove, dap a tiny pieces of butter on top. Then roll out your top layer of pie crust dough. Cut one inch strips. Space about five strips across the pie. Take the other five strips and start weaving them in and out until you have a lattice top. Sprinkle top with sugar if desired before baking.

Remember, have plenty of vanilla ice cream, caramel, nuts and other toppings available for the ultimate hot apple pie dessert! This best fall dessert is excellent serving piping hot.

You can also make variations such as an apple pie with a cinnamon crumb topping using brown sugar, butter, cinnamon and a little flour.
