Avenue Q Comes to Detroit – Fall 2008

Avenue Q, Recent College Grad

The city of Detroit will be getting a whole lot funnier this fall with the coming of the hit Broadway musical Avenue Q. The show will be playing at the historic Fisher Theater in downtown Detroit from November 05, 2008 to November 23, 2008.

Entertainment Weekly raves: “Just when you’re wheezing with laughter from the hummable, hilarious tunes, you’re blindsided by a beautifully sincere love song. There’s no handy way to describe AVENUE Q, except as one of the funniest shows you’re ever likely to see.”

This award-winning musical, which started in 2003, is simply put as Sesame Street for adults, with some actors playing their roles through monster-like puppets. The play tells the story of a young recent college grad named Princeton who is trying to find his real “purpose” in life. He stumbles across Avenue Q, the only street in the Outer Borough of New York City where he can afford to live. He soon meets all of its crazy tenants that live in Avenue Q such as roommates Rod and Nick, Kate Monster, Trekkie Monster and Brian and his fiancée, Christmas Eve.

He quickly creates friendships all the while struggling to find a job, love and his overall meaning in life. Not to mention all the hilarious and somewhat embarrassing obstacles he gets himself into thoughout the show.

While the imagery of the play takes on a child-like quality, the overall theme and dialogue is anything but. This play is definitely not for young children, with topics such as sex, racism and drinking being a major focus throughout, this play is geared towards mature teenagers and adults. But it is all played out in a tasteful and hilarious way through songs, jokes and real-life experiences we have can relate to. There is also a genuine sweet and heartfelt message that is present throughout the play about love and relationships.

Overall this is a show that is a bit out-of-the-box with its witty and comical way of expressing all those innermost thoughts we all have but never talk about. You will laugh out loud and completely fall in love with all of the quirky characters in Avenue Q!
