Arm & Hammer Baking Soda: Not Just for Baking!

Baking Recipes

Ever since I can remember, there has always been a small yellow and red box of ARM & HAMMER Baking soda open on the top shelf of our refrigerator at home and at grandma’s, really in the refrigerators of most everyone I know, you can still find a little red and yellow box tucked back on a shelf.

ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda has been around for more than 155 years and ever since it first appeared people have found countless uses for it in both their baking and personal use.

I first became impressed with the awesome power of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda in Middle grade school when my science teacher, Mr. Wood had us study volcanic activity and after constructing a ‘working model’ of a volcano demonstrated the lava explosion using a combination of vinegar and baking soda! I couldn’t wait to get home and re-create the experiment in my kitchen. While Mom was preoccupied in the madness of 5 children arriving home from school at once, I slipped into the kitchen and grabbed the baking soda from the top shelf in the refrigerator, adding it to a nearly full bottle of vinegar, I shook the mixture and stood back! Just as the mixture erupted as it had at school and began oozing from the counter and onto the floor, my Mom entered the room. Dashing to grab the still overflowing bottle from the counter she slid across the room and came to a most undignified stop against the front of the stove!

My dreams of becoming a scientist came to an abrupt halt, but my quest to find uses for Arm & Hammer Baking soda continued. In Jr. High a friend and I proceeded to get blistered while falling asleep in the sun after slathering on pure baby oil! A cool tub of Water with a box of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda did a fair job of cooling the initial sting from reddened skin, too bad we never found a way to sleep in it over the next few nights!

IN High school Home economics class, we learned that Baking Soda was used in many baking recipes as a leavening agent and cause baked goods to rise light and tender! We also learned in the same classes that a mixture of baking soda and salt made a good abrasive cleanser around the kitchen and a good emergency extinguisher for fires near or on the stove top! Arm & Hammer baking soda also can be used to quickly and easily clean light grease spills in the kitchen simply by pouring onto the spill, letting it set a moment and sweeping it up. It works wonders to keep the oil fro being spread around and leaving a film that could be a safety risk!

Long before ‘tooth brighteners or bleaches’ became popular, my grandmother had her children and grandchildren brushing their teeth at least once a day with pure Arm & Hammer Baking soda on a damp toothbrush. While I never did enjoy the taste, the was no arguing the great job it did to keep your teeth sparkling white!

Teeth aren’t the only things Arm & Hammer Baking soda does a good job cleaning! I have used it to scrub burned on food from Pyrex baking dishes, remove coffee stains from china cups and clean any type of ring or delicate jewelry with a soft toothbrush dipped in warm water and then Arm & Hammer Baking Soda!

Setting up my own household the first thing I did was to place an open box of Arm & Hammer Baking Soda in the still empty refrigerator, place another open box at the kitchen sink and another in each bathroom.
