Katharine McPhee married her longtime boyfriend Nick Cokas in a lavish ceremony on Saturday Afternoon. The American Idol runner-up in the fifth season of the show, she met her beau while performing in a production of The Ghost and Mrs Muir in 2005. Slightly more than 300 guests witnessed the event, including 2 other contestants who were on Idol with McPhee (Kellie Pickler and Mandisa). Though eyes have been raised about the age difference between the couple (McPhee is 23 years old while Cokas is 42), the couple seems very happy together. Having met before her fame, it is safe to say that they are a couple that could withstand the pressures of the industry, and it seems McPhee is ecstatic to be married.
McPhee isn’t the only Idol contestant to ever make the news because of her “celebrity romance” either. Winner of the 4th season of American Idol Carrie Underwood has frequently made the news at press junkets for her relationship with boyfriend Chace Crawford. Their relationship has always been depicted in a positive light, but Crawford’s growing fame as a heartthrob for the television show Gossip Girl has really put him in the spotlight for his own work. Both have been having a lot of fun together, and the romance just seems to be getting stronger. This is quite the opposite of original idol winner Kelly Clarkson, who still claims that she has never been in love, and is not often seen in the accompaniment of any guys. But Underwood is sure to remain in the news more for her courtship of Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo for a short time this past year.
One of the relationships that has really stood out over the years on American Idol, is that of singer Chris Daughtry and his wife Deanna Robertson. When he was on the 4th season of American Idol, his wife had just given birth, and it became a segment piece not only on the show, but for several entertainment shows that wanted to depict him in a positive fashion. He has always seemed to be a good family-man, who often dedicates things to his family, and has set the standard for great romances amongst Idol stars of the past. It’s certainly a step up from the controversy that surrounded last seasons top-24 contestant Antonella Barba and pictures that were sent around the Internet depicting her in compromising positions and attire.
Katharine McPhee’s marriage joins a long list of past contestants that have been married since their appearance of the show. That list includes Bo Bice from Season 4, Tamyra Gray, and Sabrina Sloan just to name a few. This list will also have Gina Glocksen from season 6 join the ranks soon after recently becoming engaged.
