[Updated Mar 19, 2013] AMC’s The Walking Dead is a show that lends itself particularly well to video game adaptations, so it’s no surprise that several such games have already found great success, with more in the works. Some of these games are accessible on multiple platforms, but here we’ll focus on those created specifically for PC and Mac. The following is a round-up of all of the official The Walking Dead computer games currently available to download or to play online for free.
The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct
Just released on March 19th, this is the newest video game based on the series. In this first-person survival shooter, you’ll play as Daryl Dixon during the first days of the outbreak, before the events of the TV series have begun. You’ll use Daryl’s signature crossbow to fend off walkers, figure out how to scavenge for and use supplies, decide whether to help other survivors, and generally try to survive, all with brother Merle by your side.
The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct download for PC is now available from several retailers via the game’s website .
Telltale’s The Walking Dead
This five-episode role-playing game drops you into the universe of The Walking Dead at the very start of the outbreak. Playing as survivor Lee Everett, you’ll have to make one quick decision after another to try to stay alive. You’ll meet and interact with other survivors (including some familiar characters), explore and interact with environments, fight off walkers, and lots more. As weeks and months go by, the decisions you make will radically affect the way your story unfolds.
The Walking Dead game download is available for PC or Mac from Telltale Games. The PC version is also available as a physical release exclusively at Best Buy. Telltale is reportedly working on a sequel, so if you enjoy this computer game, look for more episodes to be released sometime during 2013.
The Walking Dead: Atlanta Run
Released by AMC during the first season of the show, this casual adventure game puts you in the role of Glenn. On a solo mission to find supplies, you’ll encounter walkers and other obstacles to overcome. To win the game, you’ll have to gather everything on your list and escape without being scratched or bitten. This one is free to play online at AMC’s website.
The Walking Dead: Dead Reckoning
Also by AMC, this choose-your-own-adventure flash game features graphics styled after the comic books. Playing from the perspective of Shane, you must guide him through the first few hours of the outbreak, including his very first encounters with walkers. The objective is to stay alive and do your best to protect those around you. The more people you’ve managed to keep alive by the end of the game, the better you’ve done. This one is also free to play at AMC’s website.
The Walking Dead Social Game
In this Facebook game, you must build a team of survivors, establish camps, fend off walkers, and complete missions to stay alive. You’ll visit locations and meet characters from the AMC show, but there are also plenty of new experiences to be had. Of the four The Walking Dead computer games listed here, this is the longest. New missions and other content are added regularly, so the game never really ends — which makes sense; it is the zombie apocalypse, after all. Access this one via its Facebook app.
