10 Steps to Organizing a Kid’s Closet

Organize Closet, Winter Hats

Keeping a closet clean, organized, and under control can be a difficult task. As a parent of a 2 year old spontaneous boy, I know what it’s like to have to clean and pick up constantly throughout the day. The one thing that stays well maintained is my child’s bedroom closet.

How to Organize a Kids Closet – Clear it out

Before you can begin to organize your child’s closet, you must first clean it out thoroughly. Go through each item of clothing, each accessories and every single toy. Throw away any clothing items that have rips, stains, or tears. Check toys for any broken pieces or for parts that could be potentially harmful to young children. When checking through every thing in the closet, make sure that it fits your child and is age acceptable.

How to Organize a Kids Closet – Separate by Category

Once you have finished going through each item, place them into categories to help you better organize. As for clothing, organize into sweatshirts, coats, t-shirts, long-sleeve shirts, and pants. Get a large toy box or storage container and place all the toys inside. Hang all the clothing items on plastic hangers. All the clothing should be on the hangers the same way so that its easy to look throw them once they are hung.

How to Organize a Kids Closet – Put Away Accessories

Your child’s accessories should include things such as winter hats, scarves, mittens, and other items such as socks, under-shirts, underwear, diapers, and jewelry. Separate these items and place them into storage boxes. Each box should hold each set of items for easy access. You may want to mark the boxes on the outside of the box so they will be easier to find.

How to Organize a Kids Closet – Putting it all Together

Your child’s closet should contain both a clothing bar and shelves. If it doesn’t, I would recommend adding these to the closet. On the top shelf, you should store items such as blankets, sheets, pillow cases, and extra pillows that belong to your child. You may want to place these items into plastic bags so that they do not get a dirty or musky smell if not used in a long time.

On the next shelf, place the accessory storage containers next to each other and stack them if needed. Do not place them too tight together or you may have a difficult time pulling the one that you need out. Make sure that the writing on the outside of the box is facing out for easy access.

If you have an extra shelf, you may want to put any extra items on it in an organized fashion. These items could include a jewelry box, your child’s keepsakes, or a basket of personal care items such as lotions, baby powder, shampoo, body wash, etc. This will help give your child more space in their bedroom for their items they like to look at each day.

Next, hang up the clothing items in the closet in each section. Put the coats on one side farthest away from you because coats are not used as much as the other clothing. Organize each section and put t-shirts together, long sleeve shirts together, jeans together, etc. You may also want to organize by size of each section also. If your child has too many clothing for one small closet bar, purchase a double closet bar. These have too hooks that hang from the top bar so that you can still use your regular bar, but also has an additional bar that can be used for more clothing.

The final step is to put the toy box or storage container into the closet. This should be placed on the floor at the bottom of your kids’ closet. This way, your child can access their toys easily, and then can be put away easily, and they are out of sight when you close the closet door. If the closet doesn’t have a door and you want it to be covered, consider using a beaded doorway or curtain.
