Organizing a Child’s Closet, Room

Storage Ideas, Winter Hats

Sometimes it seems like the smallest person in the house has the most clothes (and other things). To adequately organize a child’s room may take some thought and creativity. If space is limited, this may require additional ideas on how to maximize the available space and still make it kid-friendly.

Double Hang Closet Rod

A double rod extends closet space because there are two levels of hanging space. This system is not only great for maximizing space but also gives the younger child some independence because they can retrieve clothing themselves. It’s good to put play clothes and light jackets or sweaters on the lower level. Nicer clothes and longer lengths can go on the top level. This type of double rod system is easy to install — just hook it over the existing closet rod.

Hooks

Over-the-door hooks and stick-on hooks are very useful in organizing a child’s closet. Hooks add space to hang robes, jackets, caps, tote bags, etc. The stick-on hooks allows flexibility for positioning on the closet door so it’s reachable for kids.

Drawer Storage Carts

Three or four drawer plastic storage carts are ideal for creating extra storage. These containers will provide extra storage space when the dresser drawers are full. Use it to hold underwear, socks, t-shirts, and off-season items such as swim suits or winter hats and gloves. If extra storage is not needed for clothes, then these containers can also be used for small toys. Another great thing about these carts is that they are available with wheels so they are mobile and easy to move around. If space allows, the cart can be rolled into the closet and kept there to free up floor space in the bedroom. If some flair is needed with decor, these carts are also available in color — not just clear.

Small plastic containers are also useful. Individual plastic containers/boxes in smaller sizes can be kept on the closet shelf. These could hold extra school supplies, school papers, art work, or other items.

These are just a few basic ideas for organizing and extending storage in a closet. There are many organizing products available both at local stores and online to meet your organizing challenges.

Baskets and Bins

There are storage bin systems that will help with organizing a child’s room. Something to consider with these types of systems is that a wide enough floor and wall space is needed. But if space is limited, individual baskets or bins in various sizes can be used. Baskets and bins are excellent to use because they can be purchased in an assortment of colors and designs. So not only are they utilitarian but also decorative. A basket or bin can be placed on the floor between furniture, on the floor at the foot of the bed, or on a bookcase shelf. Depending on the size, these baskets and bins can hold books, toys/games, stuffed animals, and art/craft supplies. Remember when organizing a child’s room, things that they use often should be easily accessible.
