10 Mother’s Day Quotes that Warm the Heart

Erich Fromm, Mother's Day Quotes, Zora Neale Hurston

For me, the word “mother” is synonymous with love. It is indeed from my mother’s example that I learned what it truly means to have unconditional love for another human being. There for every major milestone and setback that I have ever experienced, my mother has been my coach, teammate and cheerleader in the game of life. She has served as a constant reminder that whether I am up or down, in or out, right on time or missing in action, I am always loved!

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have identified ten Mother’s Day quotes that reflect what my mother means to me. How wonderful it is to know that others in the world feel as blessed as I do to have someone who believes in them no matter what they do, cries with them when they are hurting and rejoices with them when they succeed! We should celebrate our mothers, not just on Mother’s Day, but every day.

I have listed my ten favorite Mother’s Day quotes in no particular order of significance; each is profound in its own right. My own personal reflections can be found in bold after each quote.

Mother’s Day Quote #1:

“A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials, heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine, desert us when troubles thicken around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.” – Washington Irving

Mother’s Day Quote #2:

A mother may possibly be the only person in your life who wants you to outdo her! Mothers always want the best for their children – beyond that what they have enjoyed or experienced in their own lives.

Mother’s Day Quote #3:

When I stopped seeing my mother with the eyes of a child, I saw the woman who helped me give birth to myself.” -Nancy Friday

Children look to their mothers to fulfill their needs. With the passage of time, our mothers encourage us to become independent, find our own voice, and think for ourselves. People are born and re-born through their mothers!

Mother’s Day Quote #4:

“The mother-child relationship is paradoxical and, in a sense, tragic. It requires the most intense love on the mother’s side, yet this very love must help the child grow away from the mother, and to become fully independent.” Erich Fromm

Mothers have the tough challenge of learning to let go. This is a sometimes painful but necessary process that is made possible by love.
