Why Mowing Lawns is Not a “Lowly” Job

Lawn Mowing, Mowing, Office Jobs

As a young man mowing lawns, I always felt like my job was looked down upon. I never really understood why, though. After all of my experience, I’ve pinpointed some of the reasons why some people don’t respect lawn mowing as a job, and here are three reasons why lawn mowing is a respectable job worth getting into.

Great Pay

Mowing lawns can be a really great paying job if you handle it correctly. First, know that customers don’t want to mow their lawn. That’s why you’re talking to them about hiring you. You shouldn’t be afraid of charging a good amount for your services. You don’t want to rip them off by any means, but don’t sell yourself short either. In my experience, I find that $20-$25 is a good wage for a smallish yard (takes 30-60 minutes from start to finish). If you have to provide the mower, gas, or weed eat, the price should go up accordingly. It’s not office work. It’s a very active job, which is why someone else doesn’t want to do it their self.

No Shame in Manual Labor

There is nothing wrong with manual labor. There is nothing lowly about it. Construction, Landscaping, Carpentry, etc. They are very respectable jobs and lawn mowing is certainly included in those. It just so happens that lawn mowing is something that is more suited for young adult males than adults with careers. The many adults I know that enjoy having manual labor jobs because it keeps them physically active and is rarely boring like office jobs have the potential of being.

Healthy

Although it doesn’t take much mental strain, lawn mowing certainly is a physically demanding job that keeps you in shape. It can get a bit out of hand in the late summer when temperatures reach incredible highs, but if you stay hydrated, heat is only a discomfort. I’ve never calculated it, but I’d estimate I burn as many calories mowing 1 yard as I would on a 3 mile run or a 10 mile bike ride. It’s great cardio, a good leg workout, and sweating purges your body of toxins. If you can make money while exercising, you’d better not pass up the opportunity. Millions of people pay to exercise.
