What Happened to ‘FitTV?’

In the past year, I have become a fan of Discovery’s “FitTV.” Now I am asking, “what happened to FitTV?” The channel had many exercise shows and other shows on dieting and exercising. I became hooked on shows like “National Body Challenge,” “Ultimate Goals,” “FitTV’s Diet Doctor,” and “Buff Brides.” The shows really helped keep me motivated in my own journey towards a healthy lifestyle, but now these shows appear to have been replaced in 2011. Something bad happened to “FitTV” and its lineup.

Ever since the beginning of the year, the “FitTV” channel has been completely revamped. What I noticed is that shows that had appeared on “Discovery Health” and other related channels had replaced my favorite shows as well as many of the exercise shows. There are still some exercise shows, but not near as many as before. Oprah Winfrey’s new network “OWN” debuted at the beginning of the year in place of “Discovery Health” so it seems that many of those shows are now on “FitTV.” The new lineup hardly matches the name and former intent of the network. Now pregnancy shows and other reality shows such as “Adoption Stories” are taking the place of exercise and diet television for “FitTV.” I really now have no reason to watch what once was one of my favorite channels.

I spent some time in the discovery.com forums for “FitTV” and there were plenty of people upset with the new line up. Most of the people with problems used the exercise shows as part of their fitness routines. “FitTV” used to have exercise shows morning, afternoon, and evening. There was a lot of consensus that there was no longer any reason to tune in and many were voicing their opinions to the powers that be.

I hope the Discovery people bring back the shows that made “FitTV” what it was. If they don’t, they really should rename the network. Anyone who misses “Discovery Health” can in the mean time tune in to “FitTV” for some shows you may be interested in watching. I am not so happy with “OWN” at this point since it meant that I lose out on some of my favorite shows. There is definitely a connection between the debut of “OWN,” and what happened to “FitTV.” I had no idea that the loss of “Discovery Health” would affect “FitTV.” It was not a good way to start the new year.
