Vowing to Write Your Own Wedding Vows

Wedding Vows, Writing Your Own Vows

The vows are the most important part of a wedding ceremony. This is the time when you make commitments to your partner that bind you together for life. There are traditional vows than can be used to make your wedding complete however, more couples are choosing to write their own vows making a personalized and intimate affair.

Writing your own vows seems like it should be an easy task but sometimes it becomes challenging. The following steps will help you write your wedding vows.

1. A major component of the vows should be telling your partner how thankful, grateful, lucky, blessed, etc. you are to have them in your life.

For Example: “I dreamed of finding a man like you my whole life. I never thought I would be so lucky to find him and then you walked into my life and in walked charm, compassion, and an amazing love like I have ever known.

2. The next component is to tell your partner what knowing/being with them has done for you and how it has changed your life.

For Example: “When you walked into my life I was given a gift of love unlike one I’ve ever known. You’ve shined a light of happiness and purpose that I didn’t think was possible. You make me feel like a better person just for having you in my life.”

3. Now you are ready to make promises. There are some basic promises most couples want to include about love, honor, cherish, forgive, trust, sickness, health, etc. but you can also personalize these more as well. Remember the headlines it made when Jennifer Aniston vowed to make Brad Pitt his favorite banana milkshakes? That’s a vow no one will ever forget from the wedding party to the lovebirds themselves. It’s a guarantee that someone will ask if they are living up to this vow. Consider throwing in a vow like this. It lightens the mood, gives your guests something to remember and hold you accountable for, and will help stop you from sobbing.

Ideas for a ‘silly’ vow include: I promise to always take at least one goofy picture with you, I promise to never make you stop watching cartoons, I promise to never make you stop playing video games/toys, I promise not to send you to the store for tampons, I promise to not ask you ‘Does this make me look fat?’, I promise to always make you soup when you are sick, etc.

Example of vows: I, Jane take you, John, to be my husband for you are my partner, my other half and my soul mate. I can’t imagine waking up without you beside me. I promise to love you more than life itself because you are my life now. I promise to honor you by giving every part of me to you, body and soul and never look at another. I will cherish every moment I have with you for the gift that it is. I trust you completely and am excited to have you be the head of our household. Regardless what obstacles, be they sickness, misfortune, or bad times I will be by your side as we ride this bumpy road of life together. I promise to never change your goofiness and always try and be goofy with you. I’ll even take a goofy picture with you at least once a year. But mostly I promise to love you with all that I am and all that I ever will be until I take my last breath you will be my forever love.”
