Vintage Tin Kitchen Wall Storage Unit

Crown Molding, Home Storage, Kitchen Storage

Creating a Vintage Tin Kitchen Wall Storage Unit is an easy, fun, and affordable project that will add tons of vertical storage to a small kitchen. While it is not difficult, you need to pay attention to the small details for a professional look. This Vintage Tin Kitchen Wall Storage Unit project should cost you about $100 depending on what materials you already have.

To Make a Vintage Tin Kitchen Wall Storage Unit You Will Need:

Embossed Wallpaper

MDF Sheet

Crown Molding

Primer

Paint

2 Large Picture Hooks

Wood Glue

2″ Finishing Nails

Hammer

Utensil bars (tonal)

S hooks

Storage baskets

Embossed wallpaper is the key to this entire vertical kitchen storage project. You can buy a roll of embossed wallpaper at any Home Depot or Lowe’s. They range from $14.99 to $19.99 per roll. It applies just like regular wallpaper, but you can buy it in any many traditional styles that mimic tin ceiling patterns, bead board, and even brick. For this project buy a roll that looks like a tin ceiling pattern.

The next step is to measure your open wall space in your kitchen. You need to now how wide your available storage space is so that you can have your MDF cut to size.

Almost any home improvement store will cut wood and MDF; you just need to give them the measurements. Have the MDF cut to size. Do not be afraid to fill up a large space. You can always paint this project the same color as your kitchen wall to help the storage disappear visually.

While you are at the home improvement store have a piece of crown molding cut to the same width as your Vintage Tin Kitchen Wall Storage Unit. It will save you from having to cut it yourself later when you assemble your kitchen wall storage unit.

Now, the first thing you need to do is prime the MDF and crown molding. Let these dry.

Once the primer has dried you can apply your embossed wallpaper to the MDF. Work from the inside out if your paper is not the same width as your storage board. This will make sure you end up with an even looking kitchen storage unit.

Allow your wallpaper to dry completely and then prime it again.

Attach the crown molding to the top of the Vintage Tin Kitchen Wall Storage Unit with wood glue. Use 2 inch finishing nails to hold it in place while the glue is drying.

Now, paint the entire Vintage Tin Kitchen Storage Unit out in (white) paint. You can use any color if you want, but white is nice. I recommend white semi gloss paint so you can easily wipe it down and clean it. This is especially useful if this Vintage Tin Kitchen Storage Unit is going in a much seed kitchen.

Once the entire Vintage Tin Kitchen Storage Unit has dried flip it over on a flat surface face side down. On each side of the board, about four inches in from the side, attach your picture hanging hooks. This is how you wall hang the custom Vintage Tin Kitchen Storage Unit on the wall.

Drill your screws into the wall and hang your Vintage Tin Kitchen Storage Unit from the hooks.

Here are lots of extra details you can give to this Vintage Tin Kitchen Storage Unit to make it really unique and provide lots of storage:

-Look for those great utensil bars sold at Ikea and almost any home improvement store. They allow you to hang hooks from them so you can hang utensils and pots from them. You can also use copper plumbing.

-Try screwing in some vintage tin cans that have been emptied. You can screw straight through the can from the inside, just inside of them. Now load them up with kitchen utensils! The same thing can be accomplished with baskets!

-Hooks are always a great way to add storage in the kitchen. You can hang oven mitts and spoons from them!
