How to Build a Storage Bed Out of Old Kitchen Cabinets

Kitchen Cabinets, Kitchen Storage, Wood Cabinets

This storage bed is very similar to a platform bed, but if you want to make it taller, you can just add a box spring on top. I love using old wood kitchen cabinets to build other piece of furniture. I live in a small condo, so I came up with the idea of using kitchen cabinets to build a storage bed that has tons of under bed storage!

To Use Old Kitchen Cabinets To Build Storage Bed You Will Need:

Kitchen Cabinets

Wood screws

2X4s

Power drill

Primer

Paint

Paintbrush

MDF sheet

To build a platform bed or storage bed suing old wood cabinets you will need to use the shorter style of kitchen cabinets, you know the size kitchen cabinet you usually find over the refrigerator or sink.

This kitchen cabinet is typically about 12 to 20 inches tall and has two doors.

If you only have vertical or tall kitchen cabinets, make sure they are all the same width and turn them on their sides. Have the door open up so gravity will keep it shut and hide your under bed storage.

Now, measure how on g and wide you existing bed is.

Lay your kitchen cabinets out on the floor in a rectangle that matches this width of your bed. Get as close as you can to the size of your mattress.

The outside line of the rectangle you are making should match the width and length of your bed.

Now, on the inside of each kitchen cabinet pre drill a hole through the inside of the kitchen cabinet into the one next to it. Use a wood screw to attach the two together in two locations.

It works great to put one screw in the top left a done in the bottom right.

Move on to the next kitchen cabinet repeating this step working your way around the whole platform bed frame to create a stable storage base.

Now, at this point you area few options. If you are making a twin sized bed you can simply top off your rectangle with a sheets of MDF cut to the same size.

If you are making a platform storage bed for a full sized bed, queen sized bed or king size d bed you are going to need more support.

You have a few options. If you do not want to build more storage, but have some more kitchen cabinets, place a few in the center of the opening to create center support.

If you are out of kitchen cabinets, then in the inside of you rectangle of kitchen cabinets you could use cinder blocks of support.

Now, top off with a sheet of MDF to create a place for your matters and optional box spring to rest on the storage platform bed.

You can also prime and paint yoru platform storage bed out in any color you choose!
