Tutu Decorations for a Girl’s Room

Tutu, Tutus

Is there a little ballerina in your family? There is? Well, she’s going to love her bedroom after you give it a make-over! Create a ballet theme in her room with little time or effort when you make assorted tutus that are really quick and inexpensive.

When you purchase tulle, generally used for making bridal veils, you’ll see how easy it is to make a tutu. The net-type material is available in many different colors and is not costly. That makes tulle the ideal material to use for creating tutu décor.

One quick way to make a tutu is to cut two long, wide pieces of the tulle. One piece should be a couple inches – at least – wider than the other. Lay the long piece on a table, lay the short piece on top of it, and align the tops. Sew straight across the top of the two pieces to adjoin them. As you sew, stitch in a piece of quarter-inch elastic, and the tutu material will gather. Now, align the ends, right sides facing each other, and sew across to finish.

The elastic tutu can be wrapped around an existing lampshade, a bedroom trash can, a night stand or even a hamper. Make large tutus for those types of covers or much smaller ones to create additional décor.

Make a tutu curtain tie-back by using a piece of ribbon as the tie. Cut the two tulle pieces – one wider than the other. Fold the largest piece in half and lay the fold across the ribbon. Now fold the small piece and lay it over the larger piece. Simply tie the ribbon around the curtain and gather the fabric to form the tutu look.

Make small, ring-like tutus by cutting the two pieces – one a little wider than the other. Lay one on the other and align the top edges. Sew a running stitch, staying about a quarter-inch away from the edge, from one end to the other. Pull one thread and the fabric will gather. Do this until the tulle curves into a circle shape. Sew the ends together. Use these to encircle candles, round mirrors or picture frames, table lamps and other objects.

If you have a little ballerina in your family she’ll love the new look you can give her bedroom simply by making tutus. You can even jazz up the décor tutus by gluing on fake jewels or sequin. She’ll adore her new ballerina-theme room!
