Top Ten Chick Flicks

Chick Flicks, Chris O'donnell, Whoopie Goldberg

There are some movies that my husband refuses to see. If I force him to see one, I make it up by watching a horror movie with him. Yes, I am talking about “Chick flicks” — movies that were made seemingly only for women. The following are a list of my ten favorite “Chick Flicks”, which I believe should be watched with your best friend or a group of girlfriends.

10First Wives Club
You’ve gotta love this one. Three friends (Diane Keaton, Goldie Hawn, and Bette Midler) seek revenge on their ex-husbands in a hilarious comedy. I really like this movie! It’s a great one to watch when you’re angry with a boyfriend or just ended a relationship.

9Ghost
Okay, so I’m not one for tear-jerkers, but this movie definitely belongs in this list. Demi Moore is widowed (by husband Patrick Swayze), and visited by Whoopie Goldberg who is in contact with his spirit. All the while, Sam (Swayze) is trying to learn about his death. Love this one. (Ditto.)

8Boys on the Side
Yet another Whoopie movie. Drew Barrymore, Whoopie, and friends run amuck in the country after attacking Drew’s abusive ex-boyfriend. This movie is both funny and serious, sort of a modern Day Thelma and Louise (which didn’t make my list because I never saw the whole movie).

7Circle of Friends
I love Ireland! Minnie Driver and Chris O’Donnell are lovers. Minnie’s friend gets Chris drunk and sleeps with him because she’s already pregnant and doesn’t like who the father is, then says the baby belongs to Chris. You can’t help but feel for all the characters in this film! Be sure to bring tissues…

6You’ve got Mail
A story about an unlikely internet love between two bookstore owners who are in competition with each other in the same town. I laughed when this one came out, but watched it and decided that it really is a cute movie. Besides, you’re hard-pressed to beat the chemistry between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

5Steel Magnolias
I saw this one when I was in Tennessee, working on a film called Lycanthrope. I was all alone in my hotel room, bawling like an idiot. This is a story that follows the lives of several women, and how they all interact and relate with each other. The film is set in the Southern United States, and has a wonderful cast comprised mainly of women, including Sally Field and Darryl Hannah. yet another movie where you need the Kleenex and chocolate.

4Sleepless in Seattle
Yet another Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks coupling. I seem to be living the life of Meg’s character in this one, only my better half is in England. Tom Hanks’ son publicizes his dad’s horrible love life. Letters pour in, and the son chooses Meg Ryan, who happens to live in New York as opposed to his Seattle, to be with his dad. Rosie O’Donnell is great in this flick! A movie with a happy ending, of course.

3The Truth About Cats and Dogs
This movie reminds me of me and my best friend, Dionne25. Jeannine Garaolo and Uma Thurman team up in this film as best friends who fall in love with the same man. The thing is, said man is in love with Jeannine’s mind and Uma’s body. This movie is really funny, and makes you realize how important friendship is.

2Fried Green Tomatoes
Told in retrospect, this movie is about two friends growing up in the south. Chris O’Donnell is in this movie, too. Yet another film that makes you realize the importance of friendship.

1A League of Their Own
This movie is going to appear on many of my Top Ten lists. I call it a “chick flick” because I know that so many women can relate to it, plus it’s a movie all about women! It deals with the topics of sexism, sisterhood, and friendship. A terrific movie that is great to watch with virtually anyone. And, yes, this movie makes me cry, too.

I guess I sound like a sap with all this talk about crying! Believe me, I’m a tough person to make cry, especially when it comes to movies. I left off lots and lots of great movies that belong on this list, including Little Women and Sommersby, but this is the best of the best for me. Any of these films are sure to tug on a woman’s heartstrings… and probably make your husband/boyfriend/male friend/brother/etc. roll their eyes.
