Top Romance Movies of 2010

Movies with a romantic theme are among some of the most popular films every year and 2010 is no different. From hysterical comedies like “The Bounty Hunter” and “The Back Up Plan” to tear-jerkers like “Dear John”, romantic movies abound in 2010. There’s even an entry with a supernatural twist. SO pop the popcorn, snuggle with your cuddle partner or grab the comforter and the box of tissues and sit back with some of the best romantic films of 2010.

“When in Rome” – Kristen Bell of “Heroes” fame stars as a young woman who doesn’t believe in love. She flies to Italy to attend her sister’s wedding and meets someone special (Josh Duhamel). When she sees a woman fawning over him at a fountain purported to grant wishes to the lovelorn, she is crushed and climbs into the fountain. She selects 5 coins from the fountain, declaring she will spare these individuals the disappoint that comes from hoping for love by removing the coins they used to make their wishes. Almost immediately she is inexplicably pursued by all sorts of men, including the man of her dreams. Believing him to be under the fountain’s spell, she rejects him and nearly destroys her chance of happiness.

“Bounty Hunter” – Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston are a divorced couple, she a reporter chasing an explosive story, he a bounty hunter on her tail for failure to appear in court over an assault charge. She tries to outwit and out run him at every turn. His heart was so broken when she left him that turning her in is the perfect justice. Along the way, they learn a few things about one another and see each other in a different light.

Eat Pray Love” – Liz Gilbert (Julia Roberts) finds her ideal life, which includes a husband a home and a great job, is somehow lacking. Following her divorce, she sets out on a year-long journey of self discovery that teaches her to appreciate the simpler pleasures of things like good food, the power of prayer and what true love is.

“Life As We Know It” – Josh Duhamel makes another appearance on the list, this time opposite Katherine Heigl. The couple has one date together and knows they hate each other. The only thing they have in common is they are both godparents to Sophie, a toddling darling. When circumstances put them under one roof to raise Sophie, they have to learn to work together and tolerate each other.

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” – One of the most eagerly awaited films of the year was a box office smash. The love triangle between Bella, Edward and Jacob threatens to set off the war between vampires and werewolves. And there’s other danger from a vengeful vampire.

“Leap Year” – A custom form the 5th century in Ireland allows women to propose on “Leap Year”, February 29th. After waiting 4 years for a proposal, Anna (Amy Adams) decides to surprise her boyfriend who is in Dublin on business with a visit and a proposal, a proposal tradition says he must accept. However, fate seems to have another plan as every attempt to get there is thwarted until she is forced to hire Declan (Matthew Goode) to drive her there. The two run into a continuing series of misfortunes, seemingly designed to keep Anna from her destination and throwing the pair into situations which make them reevaluate their lives and each other.

Dear John” – Based on the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name, “Dear John” tells the story of a soldier home on leave that falls in love with a college student. They maintain a long distance romance but the toll is unbearable for Savannah (Amanda Seyfried) who sends John the dreaded letter. John burns Savannah’s letters and stays in the army for several more years before his father’s stroke brings him home. John and Savannah meet again. This time her husband Tim is dying of cancer and they cannot afford the medicine he needs. After John’s father dies, he sells his father’s con collection and anonymously donates the money for Tim’s medicine. What happens next is pure romance in all its tear-jerking glory, though fans of book may not like the different ending.

“Valentine’s Day” – A huge cast makes this a fun romp for Valentine’s Day as several couples and singles deal with their feelings about the holiday. Break ups, make ups and mix ups keep this movie engaging all the way through. Cast includes Julia Roberts, Jessica Alba, Taylor Lautner, Kathy Bates, Queen Latifah, Jessica Biel, Ashton Kutcher, Bradley Cooper, Anne Hathaway, Eric Dane, Topher Grace, Patrick Dempsey, Jennifer Garner, Jamie Foxx and Hector Elizondo.

The Back Up Plan” – Jennifer Lopez is Zoe, a woman tired of waiting for Mr. Right to materialize. She decides to forge ahead with her plan to become a mother and go it solo. On the big day, she meets Stan (Alex O’Loughlin), a guy with real potential. A romance blossoms and Zoe has to find a way to break the news to Stan. He is excited by the idea and the two grow closer as Zoe’s belly grows larger. As the end of the pregnancy looms, the pair realize they’ve kind of done things in reverse order and wonder if they really know each other well enough to get married without the chaos of the pregnancy holding them together.

“Letters to Juliet” – On a trip to Verona, hometown of Juliet of Shakespeare fame, Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) helps the secretaries of Juliet who answer letters left to Juliet in the courtyard of her home. One letter, sent in 1951, touches Sophie and she makes it her mission to find the lovers from the letter. Her journey brings love into her own life as well as into the life of the author of the letter.
