Michael Bay is continuing in his quest to produce the remake of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” movie franchise, and his latest announcement seemed to send fans of the series into a tailspin. Bay announced that Megan Fox was coming aboard the project to star in the new movie as April O’Neil. While many fans were displeased at this announcement, someone with close ties to the franchise also spoke out against it.
Peter Laird, one of the co-creators of the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” openly questioned the casting of Fox. He said that his only exposure to her was through the “Transformers” movies, a job that Bay fired her from between the second and third movie. He then said he shouldn’t judge her acting from just those two movies and “Jennifer’s Body,” which Laird called “wretched.” However, he also said there were “hundreds of better choices” to play April than Fox.
Those are harsh words, but anyone who has loved the Turtles over the years knows that Megan Fox is not April O’Neil.
Here is a look at some other popular characters that were horrible miscast in movie adaptations.
Nic Cage in “Ghost Rider”
His time as Ghost Rider is coming to an end, or at least that is what Nic Cage claimed in recent interviews. That is a good thing to many Marvel Comics fans. Johnny Blaze has been around for many years, and Nic Cage does not fit that role in any manner of thought. Cage brought his craziness to the character that was never really that crazy in the comics and he completely re-invented the character in the movie. It didn’t work and his two movies were critically blasted.
Tommy Lee Jones in “Batman Forever”
Tommy Lee Jones took on the villainous Two Face in “Batman Forever,” and while his partner in crime Jim Carrey was perfect as The Riddler, Jones was completely miscast as Harvey Dent. A decade later, Aaron Eckhart took on the role of Dent and gave the performance that the tragic former district attorney deserved. In “Batman Forever,” Jones was manically crazy, over-the-top, and nothing like the man in the comics that he portrayed. It is doubtful that Jones knew much about Harvey Dent in the comics and he brought nothing to the role.
Halle Berry as “Catwoman”
There have been some fantastic women to play Catwoman in the movies. On the old TV series, Lee Meriwether, Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt all turned in great performances. Michelle Pfeiffer was one of the most memorable and Anne Hathaway brought something fresh and cool to the role. However, in between Pfeiffer and Hathaway was Halle Berry’s performance. The entire movie was forgettable, but Berry was laughable in her performance and the character was nothing like any iteration from the comics. It was easily one of the worst comic book movie performances of all time.
