Top 10 of the Saddest Songs

Aaliyah, Amy Lee, Jimmy Eat World

Heartbreak and tragedy usually make up the saddest songs we will ever hear. These songs never fail to move its listeners however detached him or she is to the situation relayed in the song.

Here are my top ten of the saddest songs:

10. Everybody Hurts by R.E.M.

The lyrics of this 1992 hit is a reality that all of us feel hurt by something or someone at some points in our lives. It is a sad song but at the same time a wake-up call to anyone who wants to give up to keep holding on and that things will be fine someday.

9. Miss You by Aaliyah

The untimely death of R&B; singer Aaliyah was mourned by family, friends and millions of her fans worldwide. Her album “I Care 4 U” was released posthumously in 2002 as a tribute to her. This included the track “Miss You” which literally talks about missing your special someone who’s been away for quite a while. Holding on to that special feeling but at the same time wondering if what he feels is mutual, “Wondering if you’re the same and who’s been with you. Is your heart still mine? I wanna cry sometimes.”

8. Hear You Me by Jimmy Eat World

Released in 2001, this song is a tribute to those who helped us along the way but we failed to express our gratitude. We always hope and pray that wherever they go they will find peace and as the song goes, “May angels lead you in, hear you me my friends. On sleepless roads, the sleepless go. May angels lead you in.”

7. Dance With My Father by Luther Vandross

The death of a loved one is always painful no matter how prepared the family is. We will always miss them and cherish the memories we have of them.

6. Could It Be Any Harder by The Calling

In line with the previous song on this list, this song entails the pain of losing a loved one. The sadness in Alex Band’s voice as he sings this emphasizes the pain.

5. Vincent by Don Mclean

Released in 1971, this song was inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s painting “Starry Night. The said art piece was painted from memory while Van Gogh was locked in an asylum. The suicide following this made up the tragedy of one of the finest painter in the world.

4. Tonight by FM Static

This song saddens me every time I listen to it. It makes me relieve memories of loved ones who passed away especially those closest to me. But it in the end it comforts me to know that they are in a happier place now.

3. Cancer by My Chemical Romance

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death today, second only to heart disease particularly in the U.S. This 2006 hit is written from the viewpoint of a cancer victim and the agony one shoulders knowing that any moment you will leave your family and loved ones behind.

2. Concrete Angel by Martina Mcbride

Ideally, the home should be the first place one feels the safest. Unfortunately for some, the home became a source of abuse. This song tells a story of a child’s death from child abuse and the isolation she felt from the society and at the same time imposed on her to hide the situation.

1. My Immortal by Evanescence

The lyrics of this song may not be that sad compared to previous songs on this list. What is a heartbreak compared to losing a loved one right? But Amy Lee’s voice was simply heart piercing in this song. It is like you can actually feel her anguish and cry with her.
