Tips for Making the Best Cake Pops

Cake Pops, Candy Melts, Melts

Supplies:
Cake and frosting or doughnut holes
Sucker sticks
Candy melts
Styrofoam block
Edible features, such as candy sprinkles or cereal pieces

So many people are choosing cake pops over traditional cakes and cupcakes for their special occasions. Why not? Cake pops are served on sticks, so plates aren’t necessary, and the pops look so adorable. If you’re someone who has never made cake pops, or a person who has tried, but the pops didn’t turn out as expected, there are some things you can do to end up with the perfect batch of cake pops.

Cake pops aren’t hard to make but they take a good deal of time. Bake any cake, break it up into a bowl, and crush the crumbles with a fork. Stir in enough frosting (about half of a cup) so that the crumbles stick together. Use disposable gloves, shape each ball to be a bit smaller than a golf ball, and put them all in the freezer for about 20 minutes.

You can make a quick version of a cake pop, without all of the baking, crumbling, and shaping, by using doughnut holes. Whether you’re making real cake pops, or doughnut hole pops, melt candy melts of any color. Dip a sucker stick into the melts and push it into a cake ball or a doughnut hole. Do the same to all of the cakes and put them in the freezer for a few minutes so that the sticks are set.

Roll each pop in candy melts and stand it up in a Styrofoam block. You’ll find that the melts will have a smoother look if you mix a teaspoon of shortening in with them as you melt them. When the candy melts have set you can then decorate them the way that you want.

If you look at a picture of the way you want the pop to look it will be much easier to replicate it. Some things that are very helpful when creating features for pops include candy sprinkles, cereal pieces, tiny cuts off of a Fruit by the Foot, and, oh yeah, a toothpick. When you dip the end of a toothpick into candy melts or frosting you can easily make dots, eyes, cheek hues, mouths, and other features.

Although you can order candy melts and sucker sticks online, or shop for them at craft stores, you’ll find most of those places will cost more than if you just visit your local discount department store. Look in their craft section to find everything that you need but for less money. You’ll make the best cake pops ever – no matter what you want them to look like.
