Tips for Coping with Chronic Knee Pain

Knee Injury, Knee Pain

When the knees hurt it sometimes feels like there is no possible way to get around or continue with the day. I know how you feel.

Over the years I have had two knees surgeries and a recent injury has only made the pain worse. I have come up with some things that have helped me cope with the chronic pain and have helped me function day to day.

Strength Training

After my first knee surgery the doctor told me the best way to help my knee heal and reduce future pain was to strength train my legs and knee muscles. There are so many things that can be done to help build strength in the knees without ever having to go to a gym or fitness center.

Some exercises that help include chair sits, steps, bike riding and swimming. Swimming is the best, non-impact exercise that can be done at almost any level of knee injury. Simple exercises as wall kicks or just swimming laps can help build strength in the knees.

Sometimes when I watch a movie I will grab something sturdy that I can simply step up onto and back to the floor. I continue for as long as I can, trying to increase number of steps each time I do it.

If a gym is available, work on light weight lifting, stationary bicycle, stair master and other leg muscle building exercises.

I do notice a difference in my knee pain when I do not regularly exercise my leg and knee muscles.

Weight Loss

After my recent knee injury I gained almost 30 pounds, simply because I could not exercise at all during the recovery. So the number one thing the doctor told me was to lose weight. The closer to my recommended weight I was the less pain I would have.

This is mostly because the body, particularly the knees, has to work harder the heavier a person is.

Weight loss can be lumped in with strength training, since they can go hand in hand and be done at the same time.

I do have to say, I am noticing a difference in the pain at the end of the night since I have been losing weight and it keeps getting better.

Warmer Climate

If you live in a cooler northern climate and notice that the pain is worse in the cooler weather, try to consider moving to a warmer climate. I did. Help tremendously.

Other Things

I try not to take painkillers or use medications to help with chronic knee pain, but sometimes there is no other option. If needed I take a couple of aspirin and use a sports cream on the area in pain, but only if the pain is unbearable.

Please note: Seek guidance of a physician before taking any pain medication or starting any workout routine. Make sure a workout routine is right for you before proceeding.
