Tips for Cooking with Sea Salt

Oyster Stew, Potassium Iodide, Sea Salt, Table Salt

I have discovered the joy of cooking with sea salt. I even add sea salt to my dishes already prepared. Sea salt adds a rich and very bold salt flavor to many dishes. Sea salt has been used by gourmet chefs and cooks for many years. They knew the secret of how tasty sea salt can make certain dishes. Here are some tips for cooking with sea salt.

Sea salt is strong. It has differences in it’s ingredients that makes it stand out from regular table salt. Table salt contains salt, calcium silicate, dextrose and potassium iodide, if you use iodized salt. Sea salt contains salt and yellow prussiate of soda, which is an anticaking agent. A good tip is to remember that it seems to take less sea salt to season a dish than table salt, in my opinion. It is pretty close to pure salt.

Another tip is to know that there is fine sea salt and course sea salt. Fine sea salt is good for adding to your already prepared dishes. Use fine sea salt at the table for adding any extra sea salt to your already cooked meal.

Course sea salt is wonderful for using while cooking! I use course sea salt because it takes so little to perfectly season a large dish. Course sea salt is large and the granules melt or mix very well in so many dishes. Course sea salt is a joy to cook with! That is a tip to remember.

Sea salt goes well with so many dishes. While cooking, add sea salt to your homemade soups, clam chowder, oyster stew, lobster dishes, fish, pork, mushroom dishes, beef and most vegetables. I really like the flavor of sea salt in most food that I eat!

Seasoning with sea salt takes practice! This tip will help you from getting discouraged if you over salt a dish. My rule of thumb is it is better to add less while seasoning meats or dishes than more. You can always add more sea salt later but, it is hard to take it out.

A great tip is to use fine sea salt to season your salads with! Sea salt is excellent in seafood salads, tuna salad, Caesar salads and green salads. Prepare the salad then add the fine sea salt over it lightly. Toss gently and you are ready to serve!

Another good tip for cooking with sea salt is to buy a good brand of sea salt. Morton’s sea salt is a great product and it is affordable, costing under two dollars for a large container that will last you quite a while. It is also available in fine and course so, I often buy both. I leave the course sea salt in the kitchen to use for cooking and place the fine sea salt on the table.

Though sea salt is excellent on seafood, it is always wise to remember that it also compliments many other type dishes as well! Some other tips for cooking with sea salt is to be creative! You can use sea salt on poultry, beef, vegetables, soups, chowders and vegetables! Use it in your salads and broths. I have yet to try it on any food that I did not think it went well with.

The most common mistakes made while using sea salt is to accidentally use too much of it. I recommend trying it in already prepared dishes first and becoming used to the amount that it takes to properly salt one serving with. Then you will know how much to add to a dish serving a large group of people.
