Canned Seafood Review: Chicken of the Sea Whole Oysters

Oyster Stew, Oysters

I recently spotted Chicken Of The Sea Whole Oysters at my local grocery store, in the canned meat section. This product looked interesting to me and was on sale, so I decided to try these oysters. Here is what I discovered!

Chicken Of The Sea Whole Oysters are in a small can. The label on this product is very attractive. It is deep blue with the Chicken Of The Sea logo on it, a blonde mermaid, their trademark and the statement “the best oysters” written at the top. I purchased this product on sale, two eight ounce cans of oysters for four dollars. That seemed like a good deal to me.

I was surprised to find that there are a fair amount of oysters in one can and they are decent in size. I decided to batter and fry one can of these oysters. The results were fair. They fried fine and when I tasted them, they were flavorful. They are missing that fresh oyster taste for sure but, for the price, if you really like oysters and are on a tight budget, they will do. They did have an already cooked taste to them. Still, overall, they worked out, for me. With a baked potato, salad and cole slaw, they presented a fair seafood meal.

I made a homemade oyster stew with the other can of Chicken Of The Sea Whole Oysters. Now that turned out much better than frying this product. The stew that I made was pretty good with these oysters in it. I added some crackers and It made a nice pot of oyster stew. I got a good amount of stew and the flavor of these oysters complimented my oyster stew well. I liked them much better in the oyster stew than fried. These oysters are very tender so you have be careful when stirring them or cooking with them. They held together for me because I handled them gently.

It sounded very promising and had an excellent array of ingredients listed, so I will probably try that recipe next time I purchase this product. It may be the best way to prepare these oysters and get the most flavor from them. There is also a web site provided on the label of this item to visit for more great recipes.

There is a warning on the side of the can of this product stating that occasional oyster shell fragments may be present in this product so, be sure to inspect them before preparing to cook with them. I did not find any oyster shell fragments in either can that I purchased. I found the quality of this item pretty high and had no problem with this product.
