The best man is the right hand man for the groom. The best man position can be a lot of fun. The jobs that you will be assigned will involve party planning, guying around with your friend and making sure he shows up to the wedding on time.
Bachelor Party Planning
One of the first responsibilities that you will have as the best man is to throw your friend a bachelor party. The bachelor party is the final experience that your friend will have as a single man. Traditional bachelor parties include bar hopping, strippers and rowdy behavior. However, you are not limited to these activities. Many modern bachelor parties take the party on the road to interesting destinations. For example, there are sky diving bachelor parties, adventure sport bachelor parties and Vegas vacation bachelor parties. You will want to select activities based on what your friend likes to do.
Wedding Attire Pickup
Another task that you may be asked to help with is picking up the wedding attire for the groomsmen. This is a simple task that will involve going with the groom to the tuxedo shop to pick up the outfits for the wedding party. You may also need to help organize getting everyone down to the shop to be measured and fitted for their tuxedos and shoes. Finally you will be responsible for ensuring that you and the groom picked up everyone’s outfits and shoes and that they are the right sizes. Finally, make sure everyone has socks that are appropriate for the wedding attire that was selected. (Black socks for tuxes not white sports socks.)
Keep Track of the Ring
At the wedding you will be responsible for holding onto the ring until its time for the ring exchange. Some weddings include a ring bearer. If this is the case then you will take the ring from the ring bearer at the beginning of the ceremony. If the wedding doesn’t have a ring bearer then you will get the ring before you head to the alter.
Best Man’s Speech
One of the final jobs you will have as best man is to give the best man’s speech. This speech is typically funny and light hearted. Have fun with this speech, but make it come from your heart. You can talk about the groom’s past relationships, how he changed when he met his bride and you can even talk about your impressions of the bride. Just don’t cross the line between funny and insulting.
