Are you looking to invest in a new bicycle helmet for your child this year? There is quite an array of different bicycle helmets on the market nowadays to choose from. I tend to look for one that has good skull coverage, ample vents and is made well. With that said, here’s a brief look at five of the best children’s bike helmets available:

1. Bell Fraction

The Bell Fraction is a good choice if you are looking for a bicycle helmet for a petite child. It comes in two sizes; extra small and small. It comes with ample vents, has a polystyrene foam liner and an ABS hard plastic shell. I tend to like the fact that it extends down the back of the skull more than some of the other brands of kid’s bicycle helmets. When my children were little, they liked to do stunts with their bikes. During those stunts they would sometimes fall backwards off of their bikes. As such, rear skull coverage was something I would look for in a bike helmet. Bell Fraction helmets tend to cost $40 and may be purchased through most outdoor outfitters and bicycle shops.

2. Triple 8 Brainsaver

Triple 8 is another brand that I trust. The company primarily makes skateboarding helmets, but it does make a few suitable for cycling. The Brainsaver is one of them. It comes with two polystyrene liners so you can adjust the fit as needed. That is especially helpful if your child experiences a growth spurt after you buy one. It is also designed with air vents and provides a good deal of skull coverage. You can pick one up online for roughly $40. The helmets come in small/medium as well as large/extra large sizes.

3. SixSix One Recon Helmet

The SixSix One Recon is a great helmet to consider if your child enjoys mountain biking. It comes with a removable front visor and adjustments to the fit may be made with one hand. I also like the fact that the helmet extends far down the back of the rider’s skull. It also comes with ample air vents, which helps to keep the rider cool during the warmer months. You can generally pick up one online through select outdoor outfitters for around $100.

4. Pro-Tec X CVLT Bike Helmet

The Pro-Tec CVLT is an excellent bike helmet for several reasons. The shell is made from a high-impact ABS, which is a good thing if your child is a bit of a daredevil. It also comes with a foam liner and ample vents. The helmets also come in a variety of sizes including extra small and extra large. The helmets tend to retail for $45 to $65 depending on where you shop.

5. Mongoose Freestyle Youth Bike Helmet

The Mongoose Freestyle Youth bike helmet is a superlative option for tweens because it comes in a variety of designs that allows for individual tastes. From a parent’s perspective, I like that it has 360 padding to help protect the skull upon impact. I also like the adjustable straps, ample vents and the fact that the shell is made from ABS hard plastic. You can find the helmets selling online through major retailers for slightly less than $25.
