Three Ways ‘Deadliest Catch’ is Similar to Other Reality Shows

Deadliest Catch Best Episodes

“Deadliest Catch” is a reality show that airs on the Discovery Channel at 9 p.m. E.T. on Tuesday nights. The show features the dangers of crab fishing out in the Bering Sea in Dutch Harbor, Alaska. Here are three ways that “Deadliest Catch” is similar to other reality shows.

There is a Bad Guy

“Deadliest Catch” has at least one bad guy each season, either because the guy does not want to crab fish or because he likes to start trouble with other crew members. Most reality shows feature a guy that people do not like, who likes to start trouble with other people, and he becomes the highlight of the show. When you watch “Deadliest Catch” you can pick out who the bad guy is because he often starts fights with other crew members, talks back to the captain, and overall has a bad attitude about crab fishing.

The Crab Fishermen Get Annoyed with the Cameras

Sometimes on “Deadliest Catch” you will see a crab fisherman going off on the cameraman because he does not want to be filmed that particular place and time. This is just like a lot of other reality shows, most noticeably on the VH1 program “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” because the patients are coming off of drugs, and often will snap at the cameraman. “Deadliest Catch” has moments similar to this, but it often happens when a captain wants to talk to a crew member in private, he will scream at the cameraman to turn it off. There are also times when the cameraman is told to stop filming due to sensitive material, such as when a crab fisherman was told his sister had died. With “Deadliest Catch” you have a lot of men that are grumpy because they are cold, tired and hungry, and that is when the cameramen are likely to get yelled at by the crew.

Fighting

Most reality shows have a group of people living together, which often creates tension, and eventually leads to verbal or physical fights. Deadliest Catch” offers both physical fights and verbal fights, often due to the crab fishermen living together, working tirelessly for hours, and feeling homesick. The crab fishermen snap at each other when there are not a lot of crab being caught, when a crew member goes down with an injury, and when things are just getting stressful from being out on the boat. “Deadliest Catch” is filled with fights and arguments, but it always manages to work out all right, especially near the end of the season when everyone realizes they are going home.
