Deadliest Catch Season 2 DVD Review

Deadliest Catch Best Episodes

“Deadliest Catch” season 2 is a gripping continuation of the Discovery Channel series. The “Deadliest Catch” DVDs portray the working lives of crab fishermen, as they go about their tasks in one of the deadliest jobs in the world. In the “Deadliest Catch” season 2 DVDs, the crab fishermen venture back into the Bering Sea to endure 20 hour shifts and sub-zero temperatures.

Deadliest Catch Season 2: Vessels and Captains

The Maverick is owner by Rick and Donna Quashnick, a husband and wife team. The Maverick is a 92-foot House Aft boat, making it one of the smallest boats in the fleet. The Maverick can hold up to 110 crab pots and 10 people. Captain Quashnick is a second generation fisherman, who captained his first ship at age 15. In the Deadliest Catch Season 2, Captain Quashnick shows his competitiveness and belief in hard work.

The Cornelia Marie is captained by Phil Harris. The Cornelia Marie is a partner boat to the Maverick. This vessel is a 128-foot House Aft fishing boat that can hold 180 crab pots. Captain Harris has been running boats for 15 years. In the Deadliest Catch Season 2 DVD, you will see one of Captain Harris’ son, Jake, on the Cornelia Marie’s crew.

Stein Eric Nyhammer captains the Rollo, a 107-foot House Forward boat. The Rollo carries 160 pots and a five-man crew. Captain Nyhammer is running his father’s boat, to continue the proud family tradition.

The Time Bandit is owned by the Hillstrand family. The Time Bandit is a 113-foot House Aft boat, that can carry 137 pots. Captain John Hillbrand and two of his brothers make up three of the six man crew. In the Deadliest Catch Season 2, you will notice that Captain Hillstrand is outspoken and runs a tight ship.

Every episode on the Deadliest Catch season 2 DVD set is a nail-biter. You will be engrossed as these fishermen risk life and limb to reel in the biggest haul of Alaskan king crab. The following episodes are my favorite, as they best represent the danger, drama and tough decision making in Deadliest Catch season 2.

Deadliest Catch Season 2: Heading Out to Sea

The crews return to their boats for the October 2005 king crab season. A huge storm system is moving in, producing the roughest seas in years. Most crab boats stayed in port, due to the weather and the season opening on a Friday. This is known as “Unlucky Friday”, a crab fishing superstition. The Time Bandit laughed in the face of superstition, but its first pots came up almost empty. The Cornelia Marie blows a main engine and head gasket. The Maverick fails a Coast Guard safety inspection.

Deadliest Catch Season 2: The Finish Line

In this Deadliest Catch season 2 episode, most of the boats head to St. Paul Island to offload their crab. Maverick deck boss, Blake Painter, is anticipating becoming captain. A greenhorn aboard the Aleutian Ballad is mentally overcome by the harsh conditions and threatens to kill himself. Captain Corky Tilley makes it to port, while managing to keep the greenhorn from jumping overboard.

Deadliest Catch Season 2: Race Against the Ice

This is my favorite episode in the Deadliest Catch Season 2 DVD set. Captain Nyhammer chastises the Rollo’s crew for poor work and getting him fined for offloading more crab than is allowed. The Time Bandit’s crew heroically battles an ice pack, while frantically trying to haul in their gear. The Northwestern’s captain wakes his crew after a couple hours sleep, to to stay ahead of the ice pack. The drama continues as a crewman on the Cornelia Marie is injured and shorthands the crew.
